A continuously variable displacement engine has a plurality of pistons received in a cylinder block and connected to a nutator. A crankshaft with an axis of rotation is carried in a crankcase and incorporates an upper journal with a first angle relative to the axis and a lower journal with a second angle with respect to the axis. A first slider ball is engaged on the upper journal and a second slider ball engaged on the lower journal. A carrier assembly captures the first and second slider balls and incorporates an actuating cylinder. An actuation piston assembly is translatably carried in the actuating cylinder and connected to the crankshaft intermediate the upper journal and lower journal. The actuating piston is controllably translated between a first high eccentricity position and second low eccentricity position. An anti-rotational assembly connects the nutator to a piston case. A balance mechanism is adapted to change the amount of counterbalance for the nutator and the axial location of the counterbalance consistent with eccentricity of the nutator.

Variable stroke constant compression ratio engine

A radial compressor employs a compressor wheel having an inducer. An inlet air passage has a first region and a second region separated from the first region by a divider wall. The divider wall extends from an inlet plane of the inducer and connects the first region to a first air filter and said second region to a second air filter.

Inlet system for a radial compressor with a wide flow range requirement

A two component liquid pothole filler system comprises an anionic aqueous asphalt and chloroprene emulsion liquid component, which is mixed in situ with a solid component comprising crumb rubber, and in a preferable variation, a powdered mineral material, which is preferably calcined clay powder. The solid component also preferably includes a catalytic quantity of an activator, preferably a hydrous calcium sulfate activator, or alternatively, the activator may be added to the mix at the time of in situ mixing. The mixture is poured into the pothole and in its most preferred embodiments, typically hardens in about 10 minutes. It can be driven on immediately on hardening. The liquid component is stable, and the in situ mixture is stable in use and remains stable through hardening.

A variable geometry turbine (VGT) for turbochargers incorporates a turbine nozzle having a plurality of vanes, each vane having an airfoil with an inner disc and an outer disc. A first nozzle plate incorporates pockets to receive the inner discs with the inner discs substantially flush with a nozzle surface on the first nozzle plate. A second nozzle plate has pockets to receive the outer discs with outer discs substantially flush with a second nozzle surface. An integral actuation system rotates the plurality of vanes for variation of the nozzle geometry.

Balanced vanes and integrated actuation system for a variable geometry turbocharger

A variable geometry turbine for turbochargers in exhaust gas recirculation engines incorporates a turbine housing having an exhaust inlet with a first side receiving exhaust from cylinders having exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and a second side receiving exhaust from non-EGR cylinders. The first side has a first EGR-driving passage and a second EGR-driving passage and the second side having a first non-EGR-driving passage and a second non-EGR-driving passage. A first control valve is associated with the second EGR-driving passage and a second control valve is associated with the second non-EGR-driving passage. A controller is adapted to control the first and second control valves.

Quad layer passage variable geometry turbine for turbochargers in exhaust gas recirculation engines

A variable inlet area turbine employs a volute with a discharge area for flow of exhaust gas carried in the volute into a turbine inlet area. A flexible dividing wall having an end is movable along a path defined adjacent the turbine inlet area and transitioning in a smooth curve into an outer wall of the volute. The dividing wall is selectively positionable by insertion and withdrawal along the path to vary the discharge area from substantially closed to substantially open.

A turbocharger system having a compressor wheel including blades that define an inducer and an exducer, a compressor housing configured to receive the compressor wheel, and an impeller passage within which air is to be compressed by the blades, wherein the compressor housing forms an intake port configured to provide intake air to the inducer, and a bypass port opening into the impeller passage between the inducer and exducer. The bypass port places the impeller passage in fluid communication with the atmosphere without having a fluid interaction with the intake air. A bypass-air filter is adapted to filter air passing between the bypass port and the atmosphere, and is a portion of the intake-air filter.

A variable stroke and compression ratio engine employs multiple pistons connected to a wobbler. A crank with an axis of rotation has an upper journal with a first angle relative to the axis and a lower journal with a second angle with respect to the axis. A cradle connected for rotational motion with respect to the wobbler is carried by the crank with sliding engagement to the upper and lower journals for translation between a first high eccentricity position and second low eccentricity position.

A single-shaft exhaust gas-driven turbocharger includes two parallel-flow first-stage centrifugal compressors in series with a single second-stage centrifugal compressor, and a one-stage turbine arranged to drive both the first- and second-stage centrifugal compressors via a single shaft on which the compressors and turbine are fixedly mounted. The compressor housing defines from one to a plurality of circumferentially spaced inlet ducts for the second wheel of the first stage, and from one to a plurality of circumferentially spaced interstage ducts leading from a vaneless diffuser of the first stage into the inlet of the second stage.

An exemplary locating mechanism includes a bearing outer race () that has a central axis (z-axis) and that has a turbine end, a compressor end and a slot (), of an axial length, disposed between the turbine end and the compressor end; and a deformable clip () shaped as a semi-cylindrical wall having an axial length less than the axial length of the slot, where in a tension state, the clip () has an inner circumference to position the clip () with respect to the slot () and where in a compression state, the clip () has an inner circumference that locates the clip () in the slot (). Various other exemplary technologies are also disclosed.

An exemplary system for an internal combustion engine includes an exhaust turbine operably coupled to a generator, an intake air compressor operably coupled to an electric motor and mechanically decoupled from the exhaust turbine and a controller to direct electricity generated by the generator to one or more members of the group consisting of the electric motor, an additional electric motor, and a power storage. Various other exemplary technologies are also disclosed.

An exemplary compressor for a turbocharger includes a compressor wheel that includes first and second compressor faces oriented back-to-back and a bore for mounting the compressor wheel to a shaft along a rotational axis of the compressor wheel; and a compressor housing that includes a first air inlet oriented to pass inlet air in an axial direction along the rotational axis to the first compressor face, a second air inlet positioned a distance radially from the rotational axis and oriented to pass inlet air in an axial direction parallel to the rotational axis and radially toward the rotational axis to the second compressor face, and a single volute that receives compressed air from the first and second compressor faces.

High response compact turbocharger

A cooling air flow regulating device for controlling the flow of cooling air to an air bearing may comprise a housing with a piston and a spring disposed within. When the pressure of the cooling air is high, the piston is forced out of the path of the cooling air and into an open position. As the pressure of the cooling air decreases, the spring forces the piston back into the path of the cooling air, effectively blocking the flow of cooling air to the air bearing. The cooling air flow regulating device of the present invention may be useful for controlling the cooling of air bearings in turbochargers of turbocharged engine, where at low engine speed, cooling air is not required for air bearings. Methods for using the cooling air flow regulating device of the present invention are also provided.

A turbocharger with a two-stage compressor having first- and second-stage impellers mounted on a common shaft in a back-to-back configuration. The first-stage impeller has a boreless configuration, defining an unthreaded pilot hole receiving an unthreaded end of the shaft so as to establish a coaxial relationship between the impeller and the shaft. The first impeller further defines a hollow cylindrical pilot member that projects from the back of the impeller and is received in a portion of the bore through the second-stage impeller to position the impellers coaxially with each other. The shaft passes through the pilot member and is externally threaded for engaging threads on the inner surface of the pilot member to secure the impellers to the shaft. The bore of the second impeller has a second portion that engages an outer cylindrical surface of the shaft to establish a coaxial relationship between the shaft and impeller.
