The present application discloses a system and device for displaying content. The system includes an optical unit that is wearable. The optical unit includes a magnifying lens, a front light, and a display. The front light illuminates the display from the front of the display to be observable by a user via the magnifying lens.

A method for configuring a system having a wearable optical unit is disclosed. The method includes powering on the system, and in response to the system being powered on, using one or more processors to control the system to: determine whether to cause the system to run a configuration workflow, and in response to determining to cause the system to run the configuration workflow, (a) control the system in connection with configuring an interpupillary distance (IPD) for a user of the system, (b) determine whether the IPD is configured for the user, and (c) in response to determining that the IPD is configured for the user, control the system in connection with configuring a focus of the optical unit.

Systems and methods for minimally intrusive displays

Methods and structures are provided for wafer-level packaging of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). An array of LED die are mounted on a packaging substrate. The substrate may include an array of patterned metal contacts on a front side. The metal contacts may be in electrical communication with control logic formed in the substrate. The LEDs mounted on the packaging substrate may also be encapsulated individually or in groups and then singulated, or the LEDs mounted on the packaging substrate may be integrated with a micro-mirror array or an array of lenses.

An image capture device, such as a camera, has multiple modes including a light field image capture mode, a conventional 2D image capture mode, and at least one intermediate image capture mode. By changing position and/or properties of the microlens array (MLA) in front of the image sensor, changes in 2D spatial resolution and angular resolution can be attained. In at least one embodiment, such changes can be performed in a continuous manner, allowing a continuum of intermediate modes to be attained.

A system and method for authenticating a user of a device. A multi-band biometric iris scan camera system is capable of obtaining an iris image using near-infrared (NIR) light and/or visible wavelength (VW) light. The camera system can initially image a user to detect the iris color of the user and, based on the iris color, determine whether to use the NIR iris scan or the VW iris scan. Additionally, NIR and VW systems can be operated as integrated camera systems. The iris scan camera system can take a series of images and compare against a database of anonymous iris images captured at different illumination conditions, for selecting a preferred illumination condition for capturing the iris and performing authentication. The iris scan camera system can optionally track eye movement to determine when to trigger an iris scan, identify obstructions to the iris such as eyelids and eyelashes to implement corrective measures in the iris image processing, and identify facial features to determine whether the left and/or right eye is being imaged.

An optical assembly includes a solid spacing layer between a plenoptic microlens array (MLA) and a pixel-level MLA, avoiding the need for an air gap. Such an assembly, and systems and methods for manufacturing same, can yield improved reliability and efficiency of production, and can avoid many of the problems associated with prior art approaches. In at least one embodiment, the plenoptic MLA, the spacing layer, and the pixel-level MLA are created from optically transmissive polymer(s) deposited on the photosensor array and shaped using photolithographic techniques. Such an approach improves precision in placement and dimensions, and avoids other problems associated with conventional polymer-on-glass architectures. Further variations and techniques are described.

A dual-mode light field camera or plenoptic camera is enabled to perform both 3D light field imaging and conventional high-resolution 2D imaging, depending on the selected mode. In particular, an active system is provided that enables the microlenses to be optically or effectively turned on or turned off, allowing the camera to selectively operate as a 2D imaging camera or a 3D light field camera.

In a method for manufacturing a lens, a substrate which has a recess in a first surface thereof is provided. A sacrificial material is provided in the recess which has shape in accordance with a first desired lens surface. A lens material is applied to the substrate and to the sacrificial material and cured so that the lens material has a shape in accordance with the first desired lens surface, and then the sacrificial material is removed.

A through-wafer interconnect for imager, memory and other integrated circuit applications is disclosed, thereby eliminating the need for wire bonding, making devices incorporating such interconnects stackable and enabling wafer level packaging for imager devices. Further, a smaller and more reliable die package is achieved and circuit parasitics (e.g., L and R) are reduced due to the reduced signal path lengths.
