A macromolecule comprises a ring-opened polymerized product of β-lactone monomers of formula I: wherein Ris an alkyl group having at least 8 carbon atoms. The macromolecule may be hydroxy-terminated, and may be copolymerized with other β-lactone monomers having different substituting groups and/or with higher lactone monomers. The macromolecule may be used as a reactant to form an alkoxysilane-terminated polymer, a polyurethane, or a (co)polyester, or may be used as an elastomeric midblock in a triblock copolymer having hard end blocks, such as polylactic acid. Such triblock systems demonstrate two discreet regions having properties similar to styrene block copolymers and are therefore suitable for use as hot melt or pressure-sensitive adhesives. In some embodiments, such triblock polymers may be entirely bio-sourced and compostable.

Poly(3-hydroxyacid) polymers from long-chain epoxides and their uses related to hot melt adhesives

A hot melt adhesive composition comprises a polypropylene homopolymer having a DSC melting point of less than 100° C.; a butene-based copolymer; and a plasticizer. The butene-based copolymer may comprise a butene-rich amorphous poly-alpha olefin, such as a butene-propylene copolymer, or a semi-crystalline copolymer, such as a butene-ethylene copolymer. The hot melt adhesive is especially useful for bonding substrates which swell or elongate significantly in use. Such uses include adhering superabsorbent polymers to a substrate or adhering together two substrates at least one of which having superabsorbent polymers, such as the top and bottom layer of an absorbent core of a disposable hygiene article, such as a diaper, feminine sanitary napkin, and adult incontinence pad. The hot melt adhesive composition, which does not contain a tackifier, demonstrates suitable elongation at break and stress at yield, with a sufficiently low viscosity, to stabilize an absorbent core having superabsorbent polymers.

Tackifier-free hot melt adhesive compositions suitable for use in a disposable hygiene article

A hot melt adhesive comprises at least one polymer selected from the group consisting of polystyrene, polybutene, polyisobutene, linear low density polyethylene, polypropylene random copolymer, polypropylene, olefin block copolymer, polyolefins, styrene block copolymers, and ethyl vinyl acetate polymers; a tackifying resin; and at least one precisely end-capped polystyrene (PECPS). The use of the styrene-based oligomers and polymers with the precisely controlled end-groups in hot melt adhesive formulations to improve compatibility with polymers and block copolymers frequently used in such adhesives.

Styrene-based materials for hot melt adhesives

A method for making a plasticized polymer comprises polymerizing a polymerizable monomer, such as an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, in a plasticizer, such as mineral oil, and in the presence of a catalyst system. The plasticized polymer may be mixed with a tackifying resin in a method for making an adhesive. A composition, which may be useful as an adhesive, comprises a polymer system comprising a first polymer; a plasticized system comprising a first plasticizer that was in the presence of the first polymer during the polymerization step to make the first polymer; and a tackifier. The method can be used to make compositions having polymers with a low density or a low molecular weight or both. The final compositions made by methods of the invention include adhesives, sealants, coating, or lubricants.

Methods for making a plasticized polymer, methods for making a composition using the plasticized polymer, and compositions comprising the plasticized polymer

A hot melt adhesive composition made from polypropylene copolymer or polypropylene impact copolymer, a polyolefin elastomer, a low density polyethylene, a tackifying resin, a plasticizer, and a nucleating agent. These adhesives are fast setting yet show an improved balance of mechanical properties making them useful for hygiene, construction, and packaging applications.

Polyolefin-based hot melt adhesives with improved properties

A hot melt adhesive made from a blend of a polypropylene-based polymer, a polyolefin elastomer, and an amorphous polyolefin. These adhesives exhibit excellent molten and pre-set flow allowing them to wet out substrates yet develop properties needed to form and maintain strong bonds making them useful for hygiene, construction, and packaging applications.

Polyolefin-based hot melt adhesives with improved processing and bonding performance

A hot melt adhesive using polypropylene impact copolymers that is particularly well suited for elastic attachment and stretch films in diaper structures. The hot melt adhesive composition is a blend of about 2.5% to about 30%, by weight, of a polypropylene impact copolymer; about 2.5% to about 30%, by weight, of an olefin based elastomer; about 10% to about 70%, by weight, of a tackifying resin having a softening point of at least about 80&#xb0; C. and up to about 140&#xb0; C.; about 0% to about 60%, by weight, of a plasticizer; and about 0.1% to about 5% of a stabilizer or antioxidant.

Polypropylene impact copolymer based hot melt adhesive

A wholly aromatic thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer and compositions including the liquid crystalline polymer are described. The polymer composition can include the liquid crystalline polymer and a fibrous filler, e.g., a chopped glass or milled glass fibrous filler. The compositions are capable of exhibiting excellent mechanical properties. The liquid crystalline polymer provides desirable characteristics with the incorporation of little or no naphthenic acids in the polymer backbone.

High strength thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer

A liquid crystalline polymer composition that contains a liquid crystalline polymer and an aromatic amide oligomer is provided. The oligomer can serve as a flow aid by altering intermolecular polymer chain interactions, thereby lowering the overall viscosity of the polymer matrix under shear. The oligomer is also not easily volatized or decomposed during compounding, molding, and/or use, which minimizes off-gassing and the formation of blisters that would otherwise impact the final mechanical properties of a part made from the polymer composition. While providing the benefits noted, the aromatic amide oligomer does not generally react with the polymer backbone of the liquid crystalline polymer to any appreciable extent so that the mechanical properties of the polymer are not adversely impacted.

High flow liquid crystalline polymer composition

A nucleating system for a thermoplastic composition that contains a polyarylene sulfide is provided. The nucleating system includes a combination of an inorganic crystalline compound and an aromatic amide oligomer. The present inventors have discovered that the combination of these different types of nucleating agents result in excellent crystallization properties (e.g., rate of crystallization). Due to the improved crystallization rate, the thermoplastic composition can be molded at lower temperatures to still achieve the same degree of crystallization. In addition to minimizing the energy requirements of the molding operating, the use of lower temperatures can also decrease the production of 'flash' normally associated with high temperature molding operations. The composition may also possess good viscosity properties that allow it to be readily molded into parts of a variety of different shapes and sizes.

Nucleating system for polyarylene sulfide compositions

A thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer melt polymerized in the presence of a viscosity modifier that can help increase the 'low shear' viscosity of the resulting composition is provided. The increased 'low shear' viscosity can minimize drooling of the polymer composition during processing and also allow it to possess a greater melt strength, which facilitates its ability to be processed in a wide variety of applications without losing its physical integrity. Despite having a relatively high &#x201c;low shear&#x201d; viscosity, the present inventors have discovered that the viscosity modifier does not substantially increase the &#x201c;high shear&#x201d; melt viscosity of the polymer composition. In this regard, the ratio of the &#x201c;low shear&#x201d; viscosity to the melt viscosity is generally very high, such as within a range of from about 50 to about 1000.

Thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer with improved low shear viscosity

A method for forming a high molecular weight liquid crystalline polymer is provided. The method include melt polymerizing two or more precursor monomers (e.g., acetylated or non-acetylated) in the presence of an aromatic amide oligomer. The present inventors have discovered that such an oligomer can lower the melt viscosity of the viscous polymer as it is formed. The ability to lower melt viscosity in situ during melt polymerization enables the formation of high molecular weight polymers that display low melt viscosity and can still be removed from the reactor vessel without solidifying therein. This not only improves the ease of processing, but also allows molecular weights to be reached that are even higher than conventionally practical.

Melt polymerization of low melt viscosity liquid crystalline polymers

A molded part having a predetermined shape is provided. The molded part may be formed by casting a liquid crystalline polymer composition into a mold cavity at a relatively low shear rate. Due to the use of a relatively low shear rate, the polymer composition does not generally undergo extensive shear orientation, which can allow the resulting part to be further processed using standard finishing techniques. The ability to use relatively low shear rates during casting is achieved in the present invention through the use of an aromatic amide oligomer. More particularly, the present inventors have discovered that the aromatic amide oligomer can serve as a flow aid by altering intermolecular polymer chain interactions, thereby lowering the overall viscosity of the polymer matrix to 'ultralow' levels without having a significant impact on the mechanical properties.
