A lithium cell and method for producing, wherein an electrode contains a first polymer and a separator contains a second polymer having a melting point below that of the first polymer. The first polymer may be the same in the anode and the cathode, or one electrode may contain the first polymer and the other electrode contain a third polymer. The first polymer may be a homopolymer, and the second polymer may be a copolymer, and may contain the first and/or third polymers as components. In one embodiment, the first polymer is polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and the second polymer is PVDF and hexafluoropropylene. The relatively high melting point first and/or first and third polymer(s) permits high temperature drying of the electrodes, which facilitates water removal and thereby increases cell life. It also reduces swelling of the porous structure, which facilitates permeation of the electrolyte.

A battery pack containing a plurality of battery modules, said modules comprising a plurality of individual battery units, said battery units comprising a plurality of bicells with opposing terminals. The battery modules are connected in series by use of a flexible circuit and by opposing positive and negative terminals of each battery unit. The terminals of each battery unit contain a region of apertures which allow the adhesive of the packaging material to seal more effectively, thereby eliminating or reducing the amount of leakage from an individual battery unit.

Thereafter, a film-forming slurry having the same composition as the first film, plus a solvent therefor, is applied to a second face of the grid opposing the first face so as to provide a second film and such that the solvent in the slurry dissolves at least a portion of the first film and promotes solvent bonding of the films with the grid embedded therein.

System and method for multilayer fabrication of lithium polymer batteries and cells

The terminals of each battery unit contain a region of apertures which allow the adhesive of the envelope-like packaging material to seal more effectively by flowing through the apertures and sealing to itself, thereby eliminating or reducing the amount of leakage from an individual battery unit. The terminals pass through overlapped edges of the packaging material and include tangs for electrical connection to flaps formed in the flexible circuit.

Conditioning secondary lithium ion cells at elevated temperatures above ambient reduces the time required to complete this process and produces cells and batteries which demonstrate improved electrochemical performance. Conditioning includes subjecting an electrochemical cell to at least one full charge/discharge cycle whereby gases generated and removed before the cell is sealed and ready for use. The cell is placed in an environment that is maintained at a temperature of at least 30&deg; C., charged and discharged, and sealed.

A method for removing plasticizers such dibutyl phthalate from the anode, cathode, and polymeric matrix components of electrochemical cell precursors using carbon dioxide in the supercritical state is provided. The method forms porous polymeric structures that enhances the mass transport of ions in the cell which results in improved electrochemical performance.

Apparatus and method of preparing electrochemical cells

Blisters or air bubbles between battery layers can be a problem with the lamination of battery layers. The blistering can be reduced by a two-step pressure-applying method. In the first step, a relatively small first pressure is applied to the battery layers. The relatively small first pressure is done such that air bubbles between the battery layers are not formed. Next, a second larger pressure is applied to the battery layers to laminate the battery layers together. In an alternate embodiment, the pressure applied to the battery layers is changed from a low pressure to laminating pressures in one step.
