Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)-based bit error ratio (BER) calculations for reporting beyond a forward error correction (FEC) threshold include measuring signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of a first signal; extrapolating the SNR of a first signal to determine an SNR of a second signal; and determining a pre-FEC bit error rate (BER) for the second signal based on the determined SNR of the second signal. The process can further include reporting the determined pre-FEC BER. The measuring and extrapolating can be used when the second signal is beyond the FEC threshold.

A method for executing a network command using synchronized timers. The method includes obtaining, by a first device, a first current time value from a first timer of the first device, determining, by the first device, a time-to-execute value based on the first current time value, sending, from the first device to a second device, a first network command message including the network command and the time-to-execute value, repetitively obtaining, by the second device, a second current time value from a second timer of the second device, comparing, by the second device and in response to receiving the first network command message, the second current time value to the time-to-execute value extracted from the first network command message, and executing, by the second device and in response to the second current time value matching the time-to-execute value, the network command, wherein the first timer and the second timer are synchronized.

Systems and methods, for an in-band communication channel in an optical network, include adapting one or more client signals into a line signal for transmission to the second node, and utilizing line adaptation bandwidth of the line signal for the in-band communication channel. The in-band communication channel is operationally independent from the one or more client signals while concurrently being transported together over the line signal. The line adaptation allows a rate of the line signal to be independent of rates of the one or more client signals.
