The present disclosure shows the placement of a light pipe or indicator in the &ldquo;knuckle&rdquo; of the hinge of the radiotelephone. The indicator is generally centered in the knuckle and follows the curvature of the hinge. Placement of an indicator in this location allows the indicator to be viewable from the front of the handset with the top housing either opened or closed, while in use or in the charger, or from the top if the radiotelephone is carried in a shirt pocket or belt clip holster.

Apparatus for routing a flexible circuit element ( ) between a top housing ( ) and a bottom housing ( ) in an electronic device such as a radiotelephone ( ). The flexible circuit element includes a termination at a tab ( ) off the edge of the flex strip, oriented at an angle from the direction of trace routing. This provides the minimum possible flex width so that the flex may be routed through minimally sized openings, in turn minimizing the size of the electronic device.

A radiotelephone (100) includes a bottom housing (108) defining a slot (1502) and a lanyard bail (1500) movably disposed through the slot (1502). The lanyard bail (1500) is movable to an extended position and a retracted position relative to the bottom housing (108).

A charging base (4500) having a rear wall portion including center rear wall portion (4523) provides an incline for a radiotelephone when a contoured edge (792) of the radiotelephone makes contact with recessed area (4205) and outer surface (790) makes contact with a center rear wall portion (4523). Because recessed area (4205) is generally inclined, and the radio telephone when positioned on the recessed area and center rear wall portion is generally inclined, the radio telephone slides towards the guide tabs of the charging base. Further, guide elements on the charging base are used to engage corresponding guide elements in the radiotelephone to ensure that the contacts on the radiotelephone are held against contacts on the charging base at all times.

An electronic device such as a radiotelephone (100) includes a bottom housing (108) defining a first hinge aperture (2207) and a slot (2208) adjacent the first hinge aperture. A top housing (102) defines a second hinge aperture (2223) having an inner rotation surface (2226). A shaft (2210) extends from the first housing at the first hinge aperture. The shaft is sized for insertion in the second hinge aperture and terminates in a bearing surface (2216), the inner rotation surface pivoting on the bearing surface as the second housing moves in relation to the first housing. The shaft and the bearing surface both define a shaft slot (2218) aligned with the slot in the first housing for routing a flexible circuit element (216) between the first housing and the second housing.

A switch assembly (100) includes a first switch (102), a second switch (104) and a third switch (106). The switch assembly further includes a rocker actuator (108) having a first rocker arm (152) and a second rocker arm (154) and a selector actuator (110). The selector actuator is disposed between the first switch and the second switch to slidingly actuate the third switch. In one application, a radiotelephone (800, 904) includes a switch assembly (840). A controller (914) responds to actuations of the rocker actuator and the selector actuator to control storage of data in a memory (926) and display of data in the display (818, 918).
