Disclosed are systems and methods that provide a novel framework for programmatically modifying device capabilities of devices within a location-monitoring system to create unique, specifically configured host-client device connections to effectuate monitoring of the location. The disclosed framework can effectuate modifications of devices to alter their type of device operational capabilities—a host device can be configured to operate as a client and/or a host-proxy for another host, and a client device and be configured to operate as a host, and the like. The disclosed framework enables devices to be programmed such that non-native capabilities are provided to devices that modify how they operate within a monitoring system, as well as how they interact with other devices within such system.

Computerized systems and methods for modified host-client device configurations and connections

In some examples, a system for comfort or security in a building and its premises includes a plurality of 'first' devices configured to wirelessly communicate with a hub device that is a master for controlling the system for comfort or security in the building and premises, wherein the plurality of first devices and the hub device are configured to wirelessly communicate using either one of an IEEE 802.15.4 standard or a Bluetooth Low Energy (BTLE) 5.0 standard; a plurality of 'second' devices that are battery powered and configured to wirelessly communicate with respective ones of the plurality of first devices, wherein the plurality of second devices and respective ones of the plurality of first devices are configured to communicate using the BTLE 5.0 standard, wherein the hub device and the plurality of second devices are configured to communicate with each other via respective ones of the plurality of first devices.

The occupancy status of a building space may be determined by sensing an indication of motion in the building space, in response to sensing the indication of motion in the building space, starting an occupied time period having a length during which the building space is indicated as being occupied, determining a measure related to a number of subsequent sensed indications of motion in the building space during the occupied time period, and selectively adjusting the length of the occupied time period based on the measure related to the number of subsequent sensed indications of motion in the building space during the occupied time period.

A system that implements wireless communication with replay protection for lower power building control applications. In one example, a battery-powered device includes a counter value with each message transmitted to an always-on device. If the always-on device receive an invalid counter value, instead of sending back an acknowledgement, it sends back a message containing an updated counter value. The battery-powered device may keep its receiver on after sending a message for at least a period of time, the battery-powered device receives the message and updates its counter with the received updated counter value. Since it did not receive an acknowledgement, it retries its original message, this time with the updated counter value. The retry message is likely to be successfully transmitted.

Wireless communication with replay attack protection for low power building control applications

A building automation system may adjust operation of a building system based upon information regarding the relative location of one or more users of the building automation system. In some embodiments, a mobile device having location services for determining a location of the mobile device may provide this information. A mobile device may include a user interface, a memory for storing two or more predetermined geo-fences each defining a different sized region about a home of a user of the mobile device and a controller operatively coupled to user interface and the memory, the controller configured to accept a selection of one of the two or more predetermined geo-fences via the user interface. The controller may report when the location of the mobile device crosses the selected one of the two or more predetermined geo-fences to a remote device. Other geofencing approaches are also described.

Systems, apparatuses and methods for synchronizing communication actions between multiple communication devices by accounting for discrepancies between timing functionality in communicating devices. A time value indicative of a remote device's view of current time is received. Where it is determined that the time value differs from a locally generated view of current time by at least an established amount, the range of time in which communications signals with the remote device will be monitored and transmitted is extended.

System, apparatus and method for synchronizing communications between devices

Systems, methods and apparatuses for binding two or more communication devices through their common association with one or more other devices. Information associated with a common device is stored at a first device. The information associated with the common device is also stored at a second device. A message is transmitted from the first device using the stored information as at least part of a broadcast address identifier. The message can then be accepted at the second device as a result of the information being known to the second device. A 'binding by association' is thus effected by virtue of each of the first and second devices having been privy to the same information affiliated with the common device.

An HVAC controller may be programmed using a mobile device having a touch screen display, a wireless port and a controller that is in operative communication with the touch screen display and the wireless port. The controller may establish communication with and download an application program code from the remote download server. The controller may establish a direct wireless connection between the wireless port of the mobile device and the wireless interface of the HVAC controller and execute the application program code, which provides one or more configuration screens on the touch screen display of the mobile device to enable the user to configure the HVAC controller via one or more configuration parameters, and then upload the one or more configuration parameters to the HVAC controller via the direct wireless connection between the wireless port of the mobile device and the wireless interface of the HVAC controller.

A building automation system includes a host device and a plurality of client devices that can communicate with the host device via a frequency hopping protocol. The host device is configured to create and/or store a frequency hopping sequence including a plurality of ordered predetermined frequencies, and listens for communications from the plurality of client devices. Each cycle through the frequency hopping sequence is considered to be a channel. The host device may define a plurality of channels, with some of the plurality of channels reserved for routine messaging between the host device and the plurality of client devices and some of the plurality of channels reserved at times for higher bandwidth data communications.

An auto changeover mechanism for a thermostat. A heat and cool mode auto changeover with single or crossed setpoints may be an approach for doing a single setpoint auto changeover, an approach that can handle auto changeover with separate heat and cool setpoints that do not require the cool setpoint to always be higher than the heat setpoint, and also an approach that does not necessarily require a dead band between the setpoints. A hysteresis may be associated with switching to the other mode. The thermostat having the auto changeover mechanism may have a display of a mode that automatically changes between heat and cool.
