A pellet having a microstructure including a bismuth phase, a zinc solid solution phase, and a ZnHg phase is disclosed. A method of making a pellet including bismuth, zinc, and mercury is also disclosed. Moreover, a fluorescent lamp with a fill material including bismuth, zinc, and mercury is disclosed. Further, a method of dosing a fluorescent lamp with mercury is disclosed.

Bismuth-zinc-mercury amalgam, fluorescent lamps, and related methods

The disclosure relates to fluorescent lamps and methods of manufacture wherein the mercury is dosed into the lamp in a solid material containing mercury, bismuth, indium and another metal. In one embodiment, the metal is selected from the group consisting of zinc, tin, lead, silver, gold, copper, gallium, titanium, nickel, and manganese. Preferably, the atomic ratio of the indium to the bismuth is in the range of about 0.4:0.6 to 0.7:0.3. The atomic ratio of zinc to the combination indium and bismuth may preferably be in the range of about 0.01:0.99 to 0.20:0.80, and the atomic ratio of mercury to the combination of the indium, bismuth and zinc is preferably in the range of about 0.01:0.99 and 0.15:0.85.

Bismuth-indium amalgam, fluorescent lamps, and methods of manufacture

A solid mercury-releasing material and a method of dispensing precise amounts of mercury into the light emitting chamber of a discharge lamp without introducing the other dispenser components into the chamber are disclosed. The solid material includes an amalgam of one or more metals and mercury in the form of particles of high purity, uniform size and uniform composition.

Solid mercury releasing material and method of dosing mercury into discharge lamps

A pelletized lamp fill material suitable for delivering a precise quantity of rhenium and a halogen into the light emitting chamber of a tungsten halogen lamp. The pellet is formed by pressure aggregating a mixture of a metal powder and a rhenium-halogen compound. In a pellet suitable for delivering bromine into the lamp, the metal powder may be mixed with rhenium tribromide powder to form the pellet. The release of the bromine and rhenium is desirably controlled over time as a function of temperature.

Halogen lamps, fill material and methods of dosing halogen lamps

A fluorescent lamp containing zinc amalgam and a method of precisely controlling the amount of mercury introduced into a temperature controlled fluorescent lamp. Precise quantities of mercury may be introduced into a fluorescent lamp in the form of solid zinc amalgam pellets that are in a metastable, non-equilibrium state.
