A vehicle monitoring system includes a communication subsystem configured to provide two-way wireless communication, and a controller mounted in a vehicle and configured to receive data indicative of a location of the vehicle and to control the communication subsystem to transmit the data indicative of the vehicle location toward a remote communication center and receive operational information transmitted from the remote communication center. The controller receives a mode change command included in the operational information and in response changes operating mode between an authorization mode, in which the controller transmits an alert signal to the remote communication center, and a tracking mode, in which the controller transmits the data indicative of vehicle location continuously at predetermined intervals regardless of the authorization signal.

The invention is a loading and unloading device for transporting small recreational or utility vehicles in a pickup truck. The invention comprises two stationary rails mounted on the bed of a truck. A ramp is slidably and pivotally attached to the stationary rails, and an interchangeable vehicle carriage or dump bed is slidably and pivotally mounted to the ramp. In use, the ramp and carriage are lowered by a winch so that the carriage is close to the ground and substantially horizontal. A small vehicle can then be placed on the carriage. A winch then pulls the carriage up the ramp until the vehicle's center of gravity is slightly rearward of the stationary rails. The carriage stops, and the winch pulls the ramp onto the stationary rails. The ramp can then be pushed into the bed of the truck.

An article is disclosed which provides for powering or charging the battery of a variety of different electronic devices, with the article being in two parts. The first part has components such that it is 'universal' for use with all of the variety of different devices, and the second part has components which are specific to the operation of only a single model, type or brand of such device or of closely related devices which operate with the same voltage and plug-compatibility requirements of the specific device. In particular, the article with both parts (modules) present will operate a specific model, type or brand of device. However one can disconnect the two parts from each other and connect a different second part for a different device to the same first part, thereby being able to operate two different devices with substitution of only one part (the second) rather than requiring substitution of the entire article when a difference device must be powered or its battery charged. The article is particularly useful for powering or charging the batteries of devices such as cellular telephones, computers and the like from house, office or other building electrical systems or from vehicle electrical systems.

A conveyor belt is provided for carrying granular coal or ore from a mine or a crushing station, together with a belt heater in the form of a fuel burner which turns on to melt ice which as formed on the belt at temperatures below freezing. The belt heater heats the conveyor belt surface to a temperature sufficient to melt the ice film to form water and thereby prevent the granular coal or ore from sliding to impair the conveying operation of the conveyor belt or to cause spillage from the conveyor belt. When the conveyor belt stops, the fuel burner stops and thus prevents damage to the conveyor belt. A preferred fuel burner is an oil heater. An infrared heater can also be used but a fuel burner is preferred in flame contact with the belt. The flame of the fuel burner when used in direct contact with the conveyor belt can be immediately shut off when the conveyor belt stops and thereby prevents damage to the conveyor belt. The flame temperature or air temperature reaches a value of at least about 400.degree. C., preferably about 450.degree. C. to 850.degree. C. An electrical system is provided to shut down the fuel burner as soon as the conveyor belt stops. Belt heater is useful even if no ice film is formed on the conveyor belt by heating the hinge or fold area of the folding conveyor belt. An oil burner housing is provided with an air access door to permit debris dropping from the conveyor belt near the flame to be removed.
