An in-toilet urine sampling and measurement system is disclosed. One or more toilet sensors trigger volatilization, measurement, and analysis of volatile compounds in a urine sample. Volatile urine compounds may be concentrated, measured, and analyzed by a measurement system attached to a toilet bowl. A volatilizer system may use heat generated from one or more measurement devices to assist in volatilization of the urine sample.

Toilet volatile organic compound analysis system for urine

We disclose a microfabricated device for both extracting and preconcentrating samples for gas chromatography analysis. The device includes a conduit with at least two sections and multiple ports which may be connected to multiple gas chromatography columns. The inner surface of the conduit may be coated with multiple sorbents which bind volatile analytes with different affinities. The sections of the conduit may be divided by a thermal barrier which inhibits heat transfer between sections. Consequently, each section may be independently heated to encourage desorption of volatile analytes. The disclosed device separates and concentrates volatile analytes into different pools according to their chemical and physical properties before they enter a gas chromatography column that is optimized for that pool. The device reduces the amount of heat and time needed to perform gas chromatography analysis as well as avoids the need for purified gas sources typically used for the moving phase.

Microfabricated staged preconcentration and parallel column for gas chromatography

We disclose a drug tracking system and method of use which may be used to screen a subject's bodily waste in order to assess whether the subject has consumed a drug. The system includes a drug composition which is tagged with at least one artificial sweetener that may be detected in the subject's bodily waste. The subject may consume the tagged drug and a user may obtain a sample of the subject's bodily waste. The bodily waste sample may be analyzed to detect the artificial sweetener or its metabolite. In some embodiments, the result of the analysis of bodily waste may be entered into a database, compared to standards that comprises analyses of a plurality of drug tags, and the identity of the drug tag, and consequently the drug composition, determined.

Method of measuring artificial sweeteners in bodily waste to identify and quantify drug consumption

A toilet is disclosed which, in general, includes a toilet bowl and a housing. The toilet bowl includes multiple apertures and a blower, wherein the blower is fluidly connected to one or more of the apertures. The housing is fluidly connected to the blower. The housing includes a gas permeable substrate and a gas chemical sensor. The gas permeable substrate comprises a first side, a second side, intercalated sorbent media, and a rapid desorption heater.

Toilet for filtering and analyzing gas components of excretia

We disclose a device that both extracts and preconcentrates volatile analytes in preparation for separation by gas chromatography. The device includes a conduit that may include two, and sometimes three, separate sections that are connected end-to-end, but which may be separated prior to inserting into a gas chromatograph port. The inner surface of each section is coated with one or more sorbents, each with a different affinity for volatile analytes. The sorbents may be positioned along the sections of the column in order of relative affinity for volatile analytes. The sections may be heated independently of each other to release the volatile analytes from the sorbents more quickly. This device reduces the time and the temperature required to achieve separation by gas chromatography. The device may be used to perform gas chromatography in ubiquitous environments such as the home or a mobile situation.

Staged Preconcentration and parallel column gas chromatography

We disclose a drug tracking system and method of use which may be used to screen a subject's bodily waste and to identify the drug the subject has consumed. The system includes a drug that is tagged with a food dye that may be detected in the subject's bodily waste using absorption spectroscopic analysis. The subject consumes the tagged drug and a user obtains a sample of the subject's bodily waste. The user may analyze the subject's urine using an absorption spectroscopic technique. The user may enter the emission spectrum obtained from the absorption spectroscopic analysis into a database that includes the signature emission spectra from multiple food dyes that are used as drug tags. The emission spectra may be compared and the identity of the food dye and its associated drug may be determined.
