A camshaft phaser assembly configured for phasing a camshaft and a crankshaft with respect to each other is provided. The camshaft phaser assembly includes a sprocket for receiving torque from the crankshaft; an output gear for driving the camshaft; a flexible gear deformable into an elliptical orientation for engaging the output gear to transmit torque from the sprocket to the output gear; and a wave generator for deforming the flexible gear into the elliptical orientation; the flexible gear radially disposed about the wave generator and including an inner circumferential surface in contact with an outer race of the wave generator, the flexible gear including teeth for engaging the output gear in the elliptical orientation and a retainer at an axial end of the flexible gear, the output gear including a centering feature configured for contacting the retainer to center the flexible gear in the elliptical orientation inside of the output gear.

A central valve for a camshaft phaser includes a hollow cylindrical housing, a hydraulic unit, a control piston, a retaining ring, and a washer. The hollow cylindrical housing includes a first radial opening and a groove. The hydraulic unit is disposed in the hollow cylindrical housing and includes a second radial opening and a channel. The control piston is axially moveable in the hydraulic unit to adjust a flow of a hydraulic medium through the first radial opening, the second radial opening, and the channel. The retaining ring is disposed in the groove to retain the hydraulic unit and the control piston in the hollow cylindrical housing. The washer is disposed in the hollow cylindrical housing axially between the hydraulic unit and the retaining ring.

An output gear is adapted to drive a camshaft, and defines a third toothing. The first toothing and the third toothing have an identical profile. A connection assembly includes a fourth toothing engaged with the first toothing, the second toothing, and the third toothing, such that an input provided by the input gear is transmitted to both the output gear and the trigger wheel, and the trigger wheel and the output gear are driven in unison. A method of detecting a position of a camshaft based on a trigger wheel is also disclosed.

A camshaft phaser arrangement configured for a concentric camshaft assembly having an inner camshaft and an outer camshaft is provided. The camshaft phaser arrangement can facilitate independent phasing of intake and exhaust valves. The camshaft phaser arrangement includes a first driven wheel and a second driven wheel, both configured to be driven by a driving wheel. A first camshaft phaser is connected to the first driven wheel and configured to be connected to either the inner or outer camshaft. A second camshaft phaser is connected to the second driven wheel and configured to be connected to either the inner or outer camshaft which is not connected to the first driven wheel. A motion transfer assembly can connect the second camshaft phaser to the concentric camshaft assembly. One or both of the camshaft phasers can be an electric camshaft phaser or a hydraulic camshaft phaser.

A cam phasing control motor assembly, including: an electric motor with a hollow drive shaft; an actuating pin passing through the hollow drive shaft; an engagement feature; and a displacement assembly. For a camshaft locking mode: the displacement assembly displaces the actuating pin in a first axial direction to non-rotatably connect the engagement feature with a bolt non-rotatably connected to a camshaft; and the camshaft is arranged to non-rotatably connect to an input gear for a gearbox phasing unit, the input gear arranged to receive torque from an engine. For a phase adjusting mode: the displacement assembly displaces the actuating pin in a second axial direction, opposite the first axial direction, to disconnect the engagement feature from the bolt; and the camshaft is arranged to rotate with respect to the input gear.

Cam phasing assemblies with electromechanical locking control and method thereof

An electric cam phasing system is provided. The electric cam phasing system includes an electric motor including a center shaft; a camshaft; a center fastener extending into a center of the camshaft and a gearbox including a sprocket and a drive unit. The drive unit includes an input shaft coupling connected to the center shaft. The drive unit is configured for coupling the camshaft to the sprocket in a manner such that relative phasing of the camshaft with respect to sprocket is adjustable via the electric motor driving the drive unit. The electric cam phasing system also includes a lock positioned axially between the center shaft and the camshaft, the lock being configured for selectively engaging the center fastener to lock the gearbox.

A cam shaft phaser, including: a stator including stops; a rotor rotatable with respect to the stator and including a plurality vanes extending radially outward from a body; a plurality of channels, each channel passing through a respective vane included in the plurality of vanes; and a plurality of pairs of advance and retard chambers at least partially formed by the plurality of radially inwardly extending stops and the plurality of vanes. Advance and retard chambers for each pair of advance and retard chambers are separated in a first circumferential direction by a respective vane from the plurality of vanes. Each channel connects the advance and retard chambers for said each pair of advance and retard chambers. The first plurality of channels are arranged to enable fluid flow through the first plurality of channels to displace the rotor from at least one circumferential position to a mid-lock or retard-lock position.

A concentric cam shaft assembly, including: a first camshaft; a second camshaft including at least a portion disposed radially within the first camshaft; and at least one phasing assembly including first and second electric motors and a first input gear arranged to rotate at a first speed in response to receiving rotational torque from a crankshaft of an engine. The rotational torque is arranged to rotate the first and second camshafts. The first electric motor is arranged to circumferentially off-set the first camshaft with respect to the first input gear. The second electric motor is arranged to circumferentially off-set the second camshaft with respect to the first input gear.
