A low cost mechanism that may be used to extend Ethernet capability to low end devices provides sufficient capacity to support Ethernet communications using only a single twisted pair medium. Because only a single twisted pair is used, the overall cost, complexity and size associated with the integrating Ethernet functionality into an end device is reduced. A distributed power system delivers power to a Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) device over the single twisted pair medium. With such an arrangement, Ethernet capability and power may be simultaneously delivered to low end devices at a reduced cost.

Ultra low cost ethernet architecture

A protective cap and method therefor for preventing the build-up of electrostatic charges on network communications cables and also for protecting the cable ends and connectors from physical abuse. The protective cap comprises a socket housing for receiving a connector of a network communications cable that has a plurality of wire mediums, and a shorting electrical conductor to electrically connect together the wire mediums when the connector is received in the socket housing. The build-up of electrostatic charges on the cable wire mediums is prevented by the shorting electrical conductor electrically connecting the wire mediums together. The network communications cable is protected from physical abuse by the socket housing at least partially enclosing the cable connector. A network equipment connector is also disclosed that causes the discharge of electrostatic charges on a network cable as the cable is being mated with the equipment connector.

Devices for protecting network equipment from electrostatic discharge emanating from network cables

A thyristor-based forward phase control (FPC) system for controlling the power delivered to a load from an AC power source employs a short-circuit test cycle to protect the thyristor from damage. Upon activation of the FPC system, the thyristor is triggered at a phase less than one-twelfth cycle before a zero crossing so that, if there is a short, the resulting peak current will be insufficient to damage the thyristor but will exceed a predetermined threshold current corresponding to a repetitive overload current. If during the test cycle, the threshold current value is crossed, the FPC system does not trigger the thyristor again and does indicate that a short exists. The threshold current value is selected to correspond to the thyristor's steady-state load rating. If it is exceeded during normal (including warm-up and request-based) operation, steps can be taken to address an overload condition. Accordingly, the same circuitry used for general overload protection can be used as well for short-circuit protection.

Short-circuit protection for forward-phase-control AC power controller

A branch circuit includes an branch breaker, a master outlet, and two slave outlets in series with the master outlet. The master outlet is the closest of the outlets to the circuit breaker. It includes a power sensor, the output of which is graphically displayed on a multi-segment LED display visible from the front of the outlet. The power sensor output is also supplied to displays at the slave outlets so that the power measured at master outlet is indicated at all outlets. This allows the available power capacity for the branch circuit to be appropriately indicated at all outlets on the circuit. The design can be implemented inexpensively enough that it is economical to employ the invention at every outlet in a building.

Load monitoring electrical outlet system

A control system for a plurality of switched loads includes an AC line and a neutral wire and a pair of loads coupled in parallel between the AC line and the neutral. The switched loads may be operated so that one load in the pair operates in forward phase control mode and the other load in the pair operates in reverse phase control mode. This reduces harmonic current in the neutral wire otherwise resulting from odd order harmonics generated by the switching of AC current into the load during normal operation.

A lighting control system includes a plurality of lighting control modules where each module includes function switches for generating command signals to control light intensity levels to run a plurality of lighting channels connected thereto. A programmable central processing unit transmits the command signals and also generates an ID code indicating a unique identity for each. The light control modules are interconnected on a local area network for carrying the ID codes and the command signals. Each of the lighting control modules is programmable for selecting predetermined ID codes whereby command signals generated by selected control modules may be executed by other control modules.

Programmable lighting control system linked by a local area network

A multi-room controller for controlling a plurality of individual light controls, each associated with a room of a partitionable space. The individual light controls each control the light individually in the control's room. An assignment panel associated with the multi-room controller is operable to link several individual light controls in a group under the control of a selected individual control within the group. This linking occurs when several rooms have been combined into a larger room and it is desirable to have uniform control of the lighting within the larger room. The multi-room controller is in communication with each individual light control and responsive to the assignment panel for transferring control of the group to the selected individual light control. In one operation mode, the lighting is controlled by a preselected individual control. In another mode, the lighting is controlled by any of the linked controls in the group. All linked controls mimic the last activated control.

A programmable lighting circuit controller for controlling a plurality of household lighting circuits includes a microprocessor and an electronically erasable programmable read only memory for programming the household lighting circuits for a variety of loads. The lighting circuits may be configured as a combination of incandescent and fluorescent loads by designating one output of the controller as a heater circuit for any of the fluorescent loads. The microprocessor is controlled by a set of nonlatching pushbuttons on a front panel which raise and lower lighting levels, set lighting levels in memory and recall preset levels from memory. Combination of two pushbuttons simultaneously pushed may initiate special programming features such as heater designation of one channel for fluorescent lighting.

Programmable multicircuit wall-mounted controller

A light level controller includes a microcomputer controlled light switch which responds to a manual tap or a longer manual depression of the switch in order to initiate various control modes for a light source. Preset levels of light intensity may be stored in the microcomputer's memory and an automatic fade mode may be initiated to cause the level of light intensity to fade from a current level to a preset level at a pre-established rate. The controller may respond to the momentary depression of the switch to initiate the automatic fade mode or if tapped while a fade is in progress it may cause the light source to make an abrupt transition to either full on or full off, depending on whether a higher or lower level of light intensity is desired. A depression of the switch for a period longer than a tap will cause the level of light intensity to continue to change until the switch is released, and simultaneously this level will be stored in memory.
