The present application is directed to combination effect pigments comprising an effect pigment and carbon black, wherein the carbon black is adherently deposited on the effect pigment interposed within the substrate and at least one subsequent layer of the effect pigment. This structure of the combination effect pigment results in advantageous non-staining properties of the pigment and maximizes color effects of the carbon black.

A high chroma effect pigment includes a platelet substrate and an optical coating formed on the platelet substrate. The optical coating includes a first high refractive index layer, a second high refractive index layer on the first high refractive index layer, and a diffused third material having a range of diffusion between 100% to partial diffusion in the first high refractive index layer, the second high refractive index layer, or both the first and the second high refractive index layers. The first and second high refractive index layers independently have a refractive index of about &#x3e;1.65. The diffused third material is SiOor a metal oxide is different than the first and second high refractive index layers.

Effect pigments

The present invention relates to pigments with improved and adjustable sparkling effect comprising A) a plate-like substrate of perlite coated with (a) dielectric material, and/or metal; and B) a plate-like substrate of mica, coated with (a) dielectric material, and/or a metal; and a process for their production and their use in paints, ink jet printing, for dyeing textiles, for pigmenting coatings (paints), printing inks, plastics, cosmetics, glazes for ceramics and glass. The pigments show an improved sparkle effect; in particular an attractive high sparkle intensity.

The present disclosure relates to a method of making coated perlite flakes comprises: (i) providing perlite flakes; (ii) applying a layer of tin oxide on the perlite flakes to obtain tin oxide coated perlite flakes; (iii) applying a layer titanium dioxide on the tin oxide coated perlite flakes obtained in step (ii) to obtain titanium dioxide and tin oxide coated perlite flakes; and (iv) applying a layer of iron oxide to the titanium dioxide and tin oxide coated perlite flakes to obtain the coated perlite flakes. The present disclosure also relates to coated perlite flakes comprising: perlite flakes with layer of tin oxide, then a layer of titanium dioxide, and then a layer of iron oxide.

A platy pigment substrate having a carbon-containing coating thereon is provided wherein the coating comprises a pyrolyzed carbon-containing ionic species. The products of the present invention may be used in any application where pearlescent pigments have been used heretofore including but not limited to automotive and industrial paint applications.

Carbon coated high luster materials

Iridescent magnetic pigments are produced by depositing a ferrite layer and a second metal oxide layer in succession on a substrate. The substrate may be platy and is coated with the ferrite, which is then coated with the second metal oxide layer to provide interference color effect. At least one of the layers is magnetic. The magnetic pigment may be used in coatings such as paints.

A pearlescent pigment comprises (a) synthetic mica substrate, (b) calcined ferrite coating on the substrate, and (c) an outer layer or treatment wherein said outer layer or treatment was added to the calcined ferrite coated synthetic mica in water. The pearlescent pigment may be used in exterior applications such as automotive paint systems.

Laser marking of plastic material is achieved by incorporating into the plastic a laser marking particulate additive having a particle size of less than 100 nm. A mixed oxide particle of tin and antimony having a particle size of 10&#x2013;70 nm is useful as a laser marking additive when using a YAG laser. A metallic powder can further be added to improve marking contrast.

A calcined powder of co-precipitated mixed oxides of tin and antimony is used as a YAG laser marking additive. The additive is designed to impart little to no color to the plastic in which it is incorporated but to provide a high contrast dark marking after being exposed to a YAG laser.

A pearlescent pigment which is a ferrite-coated iron oxide-coated platy substrate in which the ferrite is substantially free of crystallites is obtained by adding metal ions to a slurry of hydrous iron compound and platy particles and then co-calcining in the metal and iron.
