A portable electronic device includes a free floating display lens having a stiffener ring mounted on a peripheral region or edge of the free floating display lens to affect modal density and modal distribution of the free floating display lens. Additionally, a piezoelectric supporting structure is attached to the stiffener ring, while surrounding a display, wherein the piezoelectric supporting structure is electrically driven to produce an acoustic signal in one mode and a vibratory haptic signal in another mode.

Portable electronic device

A method of forming a matrix of electrowetting pixels includes forming a patterned layer of electrodes () on a substrate () and forming a patterned insulating layer () on the electrodes () and the substrate () to define a plurality of wells (), each of the wells () aligned over one of the electrodes (). A hydrophobic material () is formed on the bottom surfaces of the wells () and a hydrophilic material () is formed on sidewalls () of the wells (), for example by one of selective reaction, selective deposition and selective etching, by the application of a beam () at an angle to impact the sidewalls () while substantially avoiding impacting the bottom surface (). First and second liquids () are disposed within the wells (), the first liquid being not soluble in the second liquid.

Forming an electrowetting module having a hydrophilic grid

An apparatus and method is provided for removing smudges () including oils and dust from portable electronic displays. The apparatus comprises a display device () positioned within a housing (), comprising a transparent cover () having a surface () viewable through an opening in the housing () and a susceptibility to receiving contaminants (). A vibration device () is positioned against the transparent cover () to provide motion () in a direction parallel to the surface, thereby causing the contaminants to move () across the surface (). The contaminants () may then be hidden by the housing () or ejected by a motion () perpendicular to the surface by another vibrating device (). Electronic circuitry () is provided for activating the vibration device () either during normal operation of the electronic device or as selected by the user.

Method of providing tactile feedback

An apparatus is provided for measuring the amount of fluid () flowing in a channel (). The apparatus comprises a fluidic oscillation flow meter () including a housing () defining an inlet () for receiving the fluid (), and first and second diversion channels () for alternately receiving the fluid () from the inlet (). The housing () comprises a first nozzle () for receiving the fluid () from the first diversion channel () and deflecting the fluid () from the inlet () into the second diversion channel (). A second nozzle () receives the fluid () from the second diversion channel () and alternately deflects the fluid () from the inlet () into the first diversion channel (). A first layer of material () overlies at least one of the first and second diversion channels () and includes a sensing area that distorts due to a pressure change caused by the fluid () flowing through the diversion channels (). A first sensing piezoresistor () is positioned on the layer of material () near the first diversion channel () for detecting the pressure change of the sensing area and generating a frequency signal.
