A broadband data broadcast system that allows rich multimedia content to be delivered to a plurality of subscribers is disclosed. The broadband data broadcast system operates by multiplexing a plurality of rich multimedia digital information streams together at a centralized data broadcast center. The data broadcast center then broadcasts the multiplexed digital information stream on a broadcast medium such as satellite broadcasts, radio frequency broadcasts, or digital television broadcasts. A large number of receiver systems receive the broadcast signal and demodulate the broadcast signal to retrieve the multiplexed digital stream. The receiver system extracts a subset of digital information streams that the particular receiver system's owner has designated are of interest. The receiver system caches the interesting digital information stream for later access. The receiver system outputs the interesting digital information streams to a client system upon demand. The receiver system may also stream an incoming digital information stream to a client as the stream is received.

A satellite ground station to receive signals with different polarization modes is described. In one example, the system includes a method of receiving a signal from a satellite at a feed, producing a first signal having a first polarization and a second signal having a second orthogonal polarization from the feed signal, and synthesizing a third signal having a third polarization different from the first and second signal and a fourth signal having fourth polarization orthogonal to the third polarization.

The present invention is applicable to satellite ground station antennas having a wide field of view in comparison to the satellites with which the antenna connects. One embodiment includes a parabolic reflector having a size that corresponds to a beam with an angular half-width larger than the spacing between neighboring interfering satellites. It also has a feed comprising at least two dielectric rod-based surface waveguides coupled to the parabolic reflector configured to have a high sensitivity for a target satellite within the angular half-width of the reflector beam and a low sensitivity for neighboring interfering satellites within the angular half-width of the reflector beam.

Signal amplifiers having a non-linear transfer function. A high speed (high bandwidth) circuit with a non-linear transfer function over a limited range of input signal is provided. By appropriate choice of components, the non-linear transfer function can be used to accurately approximate any monotonic function such as a square root transfer function. In another aspect, a piecewise non-linear circuit arrangement using a set of non-linear sub-circuits is provided to accurately generate a desired non-linear transfer function over an extended dynamic range of input signal. In one implementation of such a circuit, each of the sub-circuits approximates the desired non-linear function over a portion of the input range.

A data broadcasting system is disclosed. The data broadcasting system operates by receiving source material from a number of different sources. The source material is processed by performing adding error correction encoding and in some cases, encryption. The source material from the different sources is then multiplexed together and broadcast on a broadcast medium. The multiplexed digital broadcast is received by a plurality of receiver systems. The receiver systems demultiplex the multiplexed digital stream to obtain desired digital streams. The desired streams are then decrypted if necessary.
