The present invention comprises systems and methods for cellular, PCS, GPS and/or Bluetooth mobile communication (e.g., a mobile telephone). The systems and methods employ a fully integrated dual band IFA/loop CDMA antenna for cellular and PCS communication. Fully integrating the CDMA antenna within a PWB provides for mitigation of lumped elements to establish dual banding, and can provide for reduced antenna size, device size, cost and interference form a user's hand. The IFA antenna is configured to transmit and receive within the cellular frequency band via a capacitive tap, and the loop antenna is configured to transmit and receive within the PCS frequency band via an impedance matching stub and ground location. The system and methods further employ a firewall to mitigate antenna coupling, and a metal reflector to reduce the electromagnetic reflection, and improve antenna gain and efficiency.

Systems and methods that employ multiple antennas with a device for mobile communication

An antenna transducer assembly, and an associated method, for a mobile station, or other radio transducer. The antenna transducer assembly includes first and second antenna transducers disposed upon a substrate. The antenna transducers are elongated transmission lines and are of lengths to facilitate their transducing of radio signals that are generated to be of first and second frequency characteristics. The first antenna transducer includes a distal end part that defines an edge face surface. And, the second antenna transducer includes a distal end part such that a distal end part thereof is positioned in an orthogonal relationship to the edge face surface of the first antenna transducer.

Antenna transducer assembly, and associated method, for a radio device

An antenna transducer, and an associated method, for a mobile station operable in a cellular communication system. The mobile station also includes GPS receive circuitry for receiving and operating upon GPS (global positioning system) signals. The antenna transducer includes a primary antenna transducer portion for transducing signals generated to effectuate a communication service in the cellular communication system. And, the antenna transducer includes a second antenna transducer portion for transducing GPS signals transmitted to the mobile station. The primary and second antenna transducer portions are disposed upon a common substrate, and the second antenna transducer portion exhibits circular polarization characteristics.

Antenna transducer assembly, and an associated method therefor

An antenna assembly, and an associated method, for a radio device, such as a mobile terminal operable in a cellular communication system. The antenna assembly includes an active antenna element and at least a parasitic element. The active antenna element is of a selected lengthwise dimension and is resonant, in isolation, at a first resonant frequency. The parasitic antenna element is positioned proximate to the active antenna element and separated therefrom by a selected separation distance. The selected separation distance is determinative of a reduction in frequency at which the active antenna element is resonant. Thereby, for a given length, the resonant frequency of the active antenna element is reduced, permitting the lengthwise dimensional requirements of the antenna transducer of which the active antenna element is formed to be reduced relative to conventional antenna transducers.

Antenna assembly, and associated method, having an active antenna element and counter antenna element

An antenna assembly, and an associated method, for a radio device, such as a portable mobile station. The antenna assembly includes a TOPIFA (Top-Mounted Inverted F-Antenna) transducer coupled to a substrate, such as a printed circuit board. The dimensions of the substrate are selected such that the geometric mean of the widthwise and lengthwise dimensions thereof define a geometric mean which correspond to the resonant length at which the mobile station, or radio device, is to be operated.

Antenna assembly, and associated method, having parasitic element for altering antenna pattern characteristics

An antenna assembly for implementing an antenna internally in a mobile communications device. The antenna assembly includes a substantially planar antenna having terminals extending substantially perpendicular outward from the antenna and disposed adjacent and opposite one another. The antenna assembly also includes a connector having conducting surfaces that are disposed substantially parallel, on opposite surfaces of the connector. The connector may be mounted on a spacer that is mounted in the communications device, with the connector and conducting surfaces substantially perpendicular to the spacer. The antenna is placed on the spacer with the terminals of the antenna extending in the direction of the spacer along both sides of the connector and the terminals each contact one of the conducting surfaces of the connector. The antenna assembly may be secured in the device using a cover congruent with the outer covering of the device. Desired electrical connections to each of the antenna terminals may be made by connecting each of the conducting surfaces to a feed point or ground connection.

Antenna assembly for communications device

A retractable whip antenna incorporating a matching base loading helix for use in mobile communications devices is disclosed. The antenna functions without the use of a matching circuit since selection of the radiating elements provides a constant input impedance to the transceiver circuitry. The resulting antenna provides excellent gain over the PCS frequency band, low SAR values, circuit design flexibility and low cost. In a preferred embodiment, the retractable whip is comprised of a radiating element with an electrical length of 1/2 wavelength and having a first end attached to a conductive spring contact. The base loading helix comprises a radiating helical element with an electrical length of 1/4 wavelength and having a first end connected to a mobile transceiver circuit and a second end comprising a conductive capturing coil. The radiating whip element is constrained within the coil of the helical element and is freely moveable to an extended or a retracted position. When the whip element is in the retracted position, the whip element is disconnected from the radiating circuit. When the whip element is in an extended position, an electrical connection is formed via contact between the conductive spring contact and the conductive capturing coil, wherein the helical element effectively base loads the whip element so that the two radiating elements have a combined electrical length of 3/4 wavelength.

Half-wave retractable antenna with matching helix

A new category of mobile communications antenna is implemented in a single layer of conducting material. Wire-slot sections, including wire-tabs defining slots in the material, partially extend around the perimeter of at least one patch-tab section of the antenna. The perimeter of the at least one patch-tab section forms one edge of each slot, and the wire-tab of a wire-slot section forms a second edge of the slot. The wire-tabs of the wire-slot sections are separated from the patch-tab section by the slots and merge into the patch-tab section at a desired point. The length of each of the wire-slot sections may vary. A portion of each of a pair of the wire-tabs of the wire-slot sections functions as an input feed. The patch-tab section may be implemented as a single tab or as a plurality of tabs separated from one another by a slot. By varying the relative geometries of the patch-tab, wire-slots and tabs of the wire-slots, the electrical properties of the antenna, including the input impedance, can be adjusted.
