A communication session over a network is facilitated. A signaling datagram from a source device having a source identity may be intercepted by a network device, and a response datagram may be generated for instructing the source device to send a subsequent datagram to the network device. The signaling datagram may be forwarded to a SIP server, where the SIP server associates the source identity with the network device acting on behalf of the source device, and where the SIP server operates to connect a destination device with the source device to establish a communication session over the network. The subsequent datagram may be received from the source device, and the subsequent datagram may be made available to the destination device via the network.

Monitoring datagrams in a data network

An intermediate device is described that reduces the number of signaling registration requests and responses flowing across a network. For example, a load reducing device intercepts the registration requests, filters a portion of the requests, and outputs autonomous response for each filtered registration request. The load reducing device forwards an unfiltered portion of the registration requests sufficient to maintain registration of the requesting device. The autonomous responses keep a logical pinhole in a firewall in an open state so that the registering device behind the firewall can receive session initiation invitations. At the same time, filtering the portion of the requests reduces the number of requests and responses that traverse any intermediate networks between the load reducing device and an intended recipient of the request.

Signaling protocol registration load reduction

Techniques are described that allow a network device, such as a router, to forward data packets received from a subscriber device to an Ethernet virtual local area network (VLAN) interface within the network device where the VLAN interface has been dynamically built based on a subscriber information string. For example, a primary VLAN sub-interface (PVS) and a subscriber VLAN sub-interface (SVS) may each be dynamically built over a statically built VLAN major interface. In particular, the network device comprises a forwarding controller, where the forwarding controller receives a data packet over an Ethernet port. The network device accesses upper-layer protocol information within the data packet to determine an SVS within the network device to which to forward the data packet based on the upper-layer protocol information.
