Various example embodiments for supporting subscriber sampled congestion control are presented herein. Various example embodiments for supporting subscriber sampled congestion control may be configured to support subscriber sampled congestion control by triggering monitoring of a subset of subscriber devices of an access network area for detecting congestion in the access network area and triggering application of a congestion control policy for the access network area based on detection of congestion in the access network area.

Various example embodiments for supporting application-based traffic control in a multipath network are presented herein. Various example embodiments for supporting application-based traffic control in a multipath network may be configured to support application-based traffic steering, application-based traffic blocking, or the like, as well as various combinations thereof. Various example embodiments for supporting application-based traffic control in a multipath network may be configured to support application-based traffic control in various types of multipath networks, such as multipath networks combining wireline and wireless access technologies between an end-user customer premises and a network gateway (e.g., between a hybrid-access customer premises equipment (HCPE) and a hybrid-access gateway (HAG), in a hybrid-access communication network (e.g., based on a Broadband Forum TR-348 specification), that are in communication based on a multipath communication capability), multipath networks combining multiple wireless access technologies (e.g., cellular, WiFi, or the like) between an end user mobile device and a network gateway, or the like.

Application-based traffic control in multipath networks

An external processing system includes a port configured to exchange signals with a router and one or more processors configured to instantiate an operating system and a hypervisor based on information provided by the router in response to the external processing system being connected to the router. The processors implement a user plane layer that generates feedback representative of a processing load and provides the feedback to the router via the port. The router includes a port allocated to an external processing system and a controller that provides the information representing the operating system and hypervisor in response to connection of the external processing system. The controller also receives feedback indicating a processing load at the external processing system. A queue holds packets prior to providing the packets to the external processing system. The controller discards one or more of the packets from the queue based on the feedback.

An external processing system includes a port to exchange signals with a router. The external processing system also includes a processor to receive, from the router via the port, information representing an operating system and a hypervisor in response to the external processing system being connected to the router via the port. The processor instantiates the operating system and the hypervisor based on the received information. The router includes a port allocated to an external processing system and configured to exchange signals with the external processing system. The router also includes a controller to provide, to the external processing system via the port, information representing the operating system and the hypervisor in response to the external processing system being connected to the external processing system via the port.

Automatic configuration of an extended service appliance for network routers

Various exemplary embodiments relate to a method and related network element including one or more of the following: receiving, in a network element in the telecommunications network, a first plurality of packets transmitted from a P2P client to a P2P central entity, the first plurality of packets relating to a request for peer location information; performing deep packet inspection (DPI) to extract a key from the request for peer location information, the key identifying a P2P content item; querying a key storage module using the key to determine whether the key corresponds to a P2P content item for which transfers are to be prevented; and preventing subsequent transfers of the P2P content item between the P2P client and one or more peers that maintain the P2P content item.

Various exemplary embodiments disclose an apparatus and method for generating a database that maps metadata to peer-to-peer (P2P) content and, more particularly, to a database that an Internet Service Provider (ISP) can build to correlate metadata with P2P traffic. The database may collect metadata having a key that uniquely corresponds to particular P2P content. An ISP may use the database to identify malware in P2P files and tag P2P traffic that seeks to exchange material in violation of applicable copyright laws.

A communications network which enables service providers to optionally place limitations on the switched connection requests that subscribers may place through the network. This is accomplished by enabling node administrators to configure, on a per subscriber basis. throughput and other connection limits for all incoming and outgoing switched connections a subscriber may attempt to establish or receive. The limits are checked by an edge network node when the call is requested and the call is accordingly established or refused.
