The invention relates to a ceramic composite, in particular for use in secondary metallurgy, consisting of at least a first layer comprised of a carbon-containing, oxide refractory material, and a second layer comprised of a carbonless oxide refractory material bound with a binding agent.

An assembly includes a tapping device for flow therethrough of molten material and a cooled inductor to be connected to an electrical source and mounted with respect to the tapping device to be inductively coupled to one of the tapping device and the molten material flowing therethrough. The inductor includes an electrically conductive induction coil having therethrough at least one cooling passage. Each cooling passage has connected thereto at least one supply line for supply thereto of cooling fluid and at least one discharge line for discharge therefrom of the cooling fluids.

In a method of operating an inductor of a tapping device of a melt vessel, the inductor couples inductively during a working phase with an electrically conductive shaped component and is cooled by means of a fluid. The inductor is electrically decoupled and cooled by means of a fluid in another working phase.

A method and an apparatus for inductively heating a refractory shaped member provided with an internal space, particularly for a metallurgical vessel, enable as rapid, uniform heating of the shaped member as possible. An inner inductor is introduced into the internal space, the shaped member is heated from the interior by such inductor, and the inductor then is removed from the internal space.

Closure and regulation apparatus for a metallurgical vessel

A shutoff and/or control assembly for use in regulating the discharge from a metallurgical vessel includes a refractory ceramic rotor member to be coupled to a stator to be rotated relative thereto to control discharge. A drive rod has an inner end extending into the rotor member and engaging therewith such that rotation of the drive rod causes rotation of the rotor member. At least an inner end portion of the drive rod is formed of a ceramic material.

A refractory discharge device includes an immersion nozzle formed substantially of carbon-bonded magnesium oxide or carbon-bonded aluminum oxide or fused quartz. The immersion nozzle has therethrough a discharge passage and has an outer surface and an outlet end. An external reinforcement member is formed entirely separately from the immersion nozzle from a zirconium oxide material that is directly bonded without any carbon and by burning at a high temperature. The external reinforcement member is attached to the outer surface of the outer surface of the immersion nozzle at a position such that during use the external reinforcement member will extend above and below a casting powder covering of molten metal into which the refractory discharge device will be immersed.
