Compositions comprising liquid crystalline polymer; inert filler; and small particle size filler having a mean particle size less than about 50 nanometers. These blends have excellent adhesion and low surface roughness properties and can be used as molded articles in electronics or electrical applications.

Liquid crystalline polymer compositions containing small particle size fillers

Excellent tracking index as well as flame-resistant properties are achieved with other desirable characteristics of LCPs in a resin composition consisting essentially of: a) a wholly aromatic polyester which is melt processible and which displays anisotropy in the molten state; b) a non-conductive filler material having a diameter of less than about 3 m, with said non-conductive filler material being present in an amount sufficient to increase the comparative tracking index (CTI) rating of said composition to above 220 volts and render the composition non-burning. Optionally, an extraordinarily small amount of non-volatile fluorescent brightener can be added to the resin composition. In combination with the non-conductive filler, the fluorescent brightener is found to surprisingly and significantly improves the flame-retardant property of the resin. Such compositions are advantageously employed in electrical and electronic apparatuses.

Compositions containing liquid crystalline polymers

Blends of theremotropic liquid crystalline polymers and unfunctionalized poly(phenylene oxides) and a non-conductive filler, in which the dispersed phase domain size preferably is relatively small and present in discrete particles. These blends have excellent comparative tracking index and can be used as molded articles in electronics or electrical applications.

Excellent mold release coupled with a good retention of mechanical properties (i.e., flexural strength and flexural modulus) is made possible in the liquid-crystal polyester resin composition of the present invention, which comprises: a) 35-85 wt. % of a wholly aromatic polyester which is melt processable and which displays anisotropy in the molten state; b) 15-65 wt. % of a platelet-shaped filler having a mean particle size of less than 5 microns; and c) optionally, up to 20 wt. % titanium dioxide.

Polymer compositions containing a polyphenylene etherpolyolefin copolymer are obtained by reactive melt mixing olefin-(alkyl)acrylic acid copolymer with a polyphenylene ether and a carboxylic anhydride. The compositions are used in many commercial applications requiring high temperature resistance including formation of films, fibers and molded articles with excellent surface appearance.

Compatibilized blends of PPE/polyethylene copolymer

Polymer compositions containing a polyphenylene etherpolyolefin copolymer obtained by melt mixing an ethylene/(alkyl)acrylic acid copolymer with a polyphenylene ether or an ester end-capped polyphenylene ether. The compositions are used in many commercial applications requiring high temperature resistance including formation of films, fibers and molded articles with excellent surface appearance.

In situ compatibilization of PPE/polyethylene copolymer blends

A polymer composition containing a thermotropic liquid crystal polymer, polycarbonate and polyester. The polymer compositions are prepared by a two-step melt processing method which produces a unique microscopic morphology and improved toughness properties over conventional LCP blends.
