An authenticated print session allows a mobile device to authenticate an encrypted file for printing at a print device sent by a base computer. The base computer authorizes the mobile device to release printing when in close proximity to the print device. The authenticated print session uses the mobile device to authenticate the owner of the encrypted file, and to authorize the release of the file at the print device over a non-secure communication channel.

One example of a communication architecture for direct printing and scanning includes a computing device for generating an electronic image and a page description language for producing a deterministic print file of the electronic image, the deterministic print file being natively viewable in a Portable Document File (PDF) viewer. The architecture also includes a printer for receiving the deterministic print file and for beginning printing the electronic image before the complete deterministic print file is received by the printer. A method for printing a document is also provided.

Communication architectures for direct printing and scanning

A printing system for processing a print job includes a host computer; and a printer in communication with the host computer. The host computer comprises a printer driver that determines whether each print job unit can be more efficiently rendered on the host computer or on the printer and processes the print job accordingly. A method of processing a print job includes determining whether each step in rendering a print job unit of the print job can be more rapidly completed on a host computer or on a printer, and rendering the print job accordingly.
