An MPEG decoding system in a host system, including software instructions for decoding a first portion of MPEG encoded data, including instructions for extracting macroblock data from said MPEG encoded data and for establishing a decoding order for said macroblock data. The system further includes hardware for extracting motion vector data and display data from said macroblocks. An entropy decoder for decoding encoded AC coefficients and DC coefficients in said display data is provided. An inverse quantization unit inversely quantizing said coefficients into a resulting array of decoded AC coefficients is also provided. An de-zig-zag unit scans said array of decoded AC coefficients and DC coefficients in a zig-zag pattern to provide a block of discrete cosine transformed coefficients. A inverse discrete cosine transform unit takes the inverse discrete cosine transform of the block of discrete cosine transformed coefficients to provide a first set of pel data. A motion vector processor decodes the motion vector data to provide a second set of pel data, and a motion compensation unit adds the first and second sets of pel data.

Multiple sequence MPEG decoder

A method and apparatus are provided for real time decompression and post-decompress manipulation of compressed full motion video. A decompressed play-back signal is supplied to a real-time video processing system by way of an adaptor for post-decompress manipulation. The post-decompress manipulations include real-time, interactive geometry transformations and color re-mappings. The adaptor includes a range expansion module for eliminating dead space such as found in CCIR-601 outputs. The adaptor further includes a resampling module for programmably converting the pixels-per-line format of the decompressed play-back signal. The adaptor additionally includes a clip-and-dither module for altering the bits-per-pixel format of the adaptor output signal and for applying a programmably-defined dither to the adaptor output signal.

Real time decompression and post-decompress manipulation of compressed

A process for decoding MPEG encoded image data stored in a system memory utilizing a configurable image decoding apparatus. The process comprises the steps of: (a) extracting macroblock information from said MPEG encoded image data, the macroblocks containing image data and motion compensation data; (b) extracting a series of parameters from the MPEG encoded image data for decoding the MPEG encoded data; (c) determining quantization factors from the encoded image data; (d) configuring the configurable image decoding apparatus, including (i) configuring a means for parsing the macroblock data into motion vectors and image data with the series of parameters with the parameters for decoding the encoded data; (ii) configuring a means for performing inverse quantization with the quantization co-efficients; (e) determining a decoding order of the extracted macroblock information to be decoded; (f) providing said extracted macroblock information to the parsing means in the decoding order; (g) combining decoded image data with motion vectors extracted by the parsing means; and (h) storing the combined data in the system memory.
