Systems and methods for analyzing electrical activity in smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal tract of a patient are disclosed. The systems includes an electromyographic-sensing patch adapted for placement on the skin of the abdomen of the patient. The patch has at least one bipolar electrode pair, or a multitude arranged in an array, and is enabled for communication of a signal indicative of a sensed electromyographic signal. The methods include artifact removal, data normalization, and peak detection methods on data derived from the sensed electromyographic signal and employ, at least for example, machine learning methods.

Artificial intelligence models for wireless patch data acquisition for gastrointestinal electrodiagnostics

Embodiments of a method for removal and replacement of artifacts in electrophysiological data from muscular activity in the gastrointestinal tract of a patient are disclosed. The approach includes setting an artifact identification threshold based on the parameters of the data, assessing the full extent of the artifact in time, and replacing the values with ones that are neutral in the time series and minimizing the effect on a power spectrum of the data. More particularly, the method includes steps of identifying artifacts within the raw time series data, eliminating the identified artifacts, and replacing the artifacts with any of interpolated points or constant value points to create a clean time series data set representing valid gastrointestinal tract EMG signals.

Systems and methods for processing electromyographic signals of the gastrointestinal tract

System and methods for acquiring and processing myoelectrical data from the gastrointestinal tract of a patient are provided. In various embodiments, the systems and methods monitor the motor activity of a patient recovering from surgery to detect a resumption in gastrointestinal motility. In some embodiments, the systems and methods enable proper post-operative ileus in the patient. In some embodiments, the systems and methods allow researchers or clinicians to determine the efficacy of one or more therapies intended to encourage gastrointestinal motility. In some embodiments, the systems and methods enable clinicians to predict and facilitate the proper timing of discharge from a healthcare facility following surgery.

Apparatus and method for detecting gastrointestinal motor activity during post-operative recovery

A system and method for profiling electrical activity in smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal tract muscular of a patient are disclosed. The system includes electromyographic-sensing patches adapted for placement on the skin of the abdomen of the patient. Each patch has at least one bipolar electrode pair, or a multitude arranged in an array, and is enabled for communication of a signal indicative of a sensed electromyographic signal. The system further includes networked computing devices. The local patch device is configured for wireless communication between the EMG-sensing patches and a local computing device, to enable wireless transmission from the patch to the networked computing devices. The networked computing device is configured to process large aggregate collections of multi-hour or day signals received from the local computing device to yield diagnostically valuable physiological parameters of gastrointestinal smooth muscle electrical activity.

Attenuating masks for selective attenuation of radiation, particularly from an x-ray source in brachytherapy, employ materials having atomic number in a specific range, so as to attenuate radiation dose intensity generally proportionally through a range of distance from the source. Some preferred attenuation materials are silver and molybdenum. A set of small masks can be provided for a particular design of catheter that holds a radiation source, each mask having a size and shape to define a different solid angle of masking, so that in a brachytherapy procedure, sensitive tissue such as bone or skin can be protected by proper selection of and positioning of the attenuating mask, to reduce the dose intensity to that tissue.

A device, system and method for administering radiation therapy to a tissue surface of a patient utilizes an applicator capable of controlled movement and repositioning over a selected area of tissue, under the control of a computer or controller. A servo-controlled manipulator can effect a raster scan of the desired area, such as an area of the skin, and this can be in any desired pattern such as serpentine, spiral, parallel but unidirectional, or irregular patterns. Preferably a third direction of control is included, i.e. a depth direction, with an appropriate form of depth sensor, a signal from which can be used to adjust the radiation source so that radiation of the tissue surface is consistent over varied contoured.

Apparatus and methods for radiation treatment of tissue surfaces

A flexible, lightweight radiation absorbing sheet or shield includes heavy metal particles in one layer and mid-atomic number particles in another layer, the layer that will be adjacent to the patient. The shield is particularly intended for protection of the wearer and others from radiation emanating from a therapeutic source positioned within the patient's body. With the disclosed multi-layer shield construction, backscattered radiation off the heavy metal particle layer, affecting the patient's adjacent tissue, is minimized.

Proportional attenuation of radiation in brachytherapy treatment

A balloon brachytherapy applicator has either a single or double chambers, with the capability of 'blistering' outwardly at a specified area on one side of the balloon. This is useful to move sensitive tissue farther away from a radiation source within a source guide inside the balloon. In one case a secondary compartment is formed on the primary balloon, and is separately inflatable so as to allow blistering as desired when needed. In another form the balloon comprises a single chamber but with a 'window' or area in which the balloon wall is elastic, or substantially more elastic than the main balloon wall, so that inflation of the balloon up to a certain point forms a substantially regular balloon shape, and the addition of further pressure will blister out the elastic area to increase the distance between the shaft and the sensitive tissue in a desired orientation of the balloon.

Method and apparatus for modifying distance from a brachytherapy radiation source to sensitive anatomical structures

A system and method for analyzing the characteristics of a thin film is provided. The current invention extends the capability of IR sensors to measure thin films through configuring a plurality of detection channels with appropriately chosen filters. With the multichannel infrared sensor, the characteristic signature of interference fringes can be detected simultaneously with, or instead, of absorption-based measurements.

The calibration of a laser caliber is described. The laser caliber uses first and second sensors to determine the distance to different sides of a sheet. A third sensor is used to determine the distance between the first and second sensors. The calibration of the first, second, and third sensors is done by positioning a test object onto the platform sensed by the third sensor. The platform is moved to multiple positions in order to calibrate the first, second and third sensors. Since the displacement of the platform moves the distance to the target of the first, second and third sensors the same amount, the sensors can be accurately calibrated for a number of different positions of the test object. A very accurate calibrating displacement measuring device such as an LVDT can be used.

Preferential optical splitters are used in a multichannel wavelength measurement device. The optical splitters preferentially provide light at a certain wavelength to a detector. Preferentially providing light to the detectors allows for increased optical efficiencies.
