It may be desirable to implement a vignetting effect in a display. The vignetting effect causes the display to have a light-emitting area that gradually fades to a black, non-light-emitting area. The vignetting effect allows for the size and shape of the light-emitting area to be controlled while still being aesthetically pleasing to a viewer. To implement a vignetting mask for the vignetting effect, control circuitry in the electronic device may apply dimming factors to image data for the display. To avoid artifacts caused by the vignetting mask, an initial array of dimming factors for implementing the vignetting mask may have a range between &#x2212;0.5 and 1.5. After upsampling, clamping may be performed to reduce the range of the dimming factors to between 0 and 1. Ultimately, the dimming factors are applied to image data for each frame to implement the vignetting mask in each frame.

Display with a vignetting mask

Some implementations provide improved user experiences on head mounted devices (HMDs) that provide near eye viewing, e.g., HMDs that display distorted images and provide lenses that undistort the images for the user. The images are produced using distortion that is corrected dynamically based on context to conserve device resources. To do so, a context associated with a state of the user, the HMD, or content being viewed on the HMD is tracked during the user experience. For example, the device may predict pupil position, eye state, eye gaze direction, or eye fixation, content type, connection mode, and other context. The device uses the tracked context to determine how to correct distortion for the images at different points during the user experience. For example, new distortion corrections may be computed and used while the user's gaze is moving and previously-determined distortion corrections may be used while the user's gaze is fixed.

Context aware dynamic distortion correction

Systems, apparatuses, and/or methods to characterize a user feature. For example, and apparatus may include a pattern receiver to receive a feature infrared (IR) pattern corresponding to non-uniform IR radiation reflected by skin of the user feature and an object IR pattern corresponding to IR radiation reflected by an object. The apparatus may further include a filter to generate a modified IR pattern from the object IR pattern and to remove at least a part of the modified IR pattern from feature IR pattern. In addition, the apparatus may include a feature characterizer to characterize the user feature based on the feature IR pattern. In one example, a computing platform may be controlled based on the characterization of the user feature.

Feature characterization from infrared radiation

Embodiments relate to tracking a pose of a 3D object. In embodiments, a 3D computer model, consisting of geometry and joints, matching the 3D real-world object may be used for the tracking process. Processing the 3D model may be done using collision constraints generated from interpenetrating geometry detected in the 3D model, and by angular motion constraints generated by the joints describing the connections between pieces/segments/bones of the model. The depth data in its 3D (point cloud) form, supplied by a depth camera, may be used to create additional constraints on the surface of the 3D model thus limiting its motion. Combined together, all the constraints, using linear equation processing, may be satisfied to determine a plausible pose of the 3D model that matches the real-world pose of the object in front of the 3D camera.
