Methods and apparatus are described for reducing end-to-end latency for location determination of a user equipment (UE). Location requests from an external client for a UE may be supported using control plane signaling. Location reports to the external client may be supported with user plane signaling to minimize delay. An event report with location information may be sent using user plane signaling to the external client (or Application Function) directly or via a Location Management Function (LMF) or Gateway Mobile Location Center (GMLC) or via both the LMF and GMLC. If the LMF or GMLC receive an event report from the UE, the LMF or GMLC may send the event report to the external client with user plane signaling. A periodic or triggered cumulative event report may be sent to the LMF, GMLC or external client using control plane signaling to confirm the periodic or triggered location request remains operational.

Systems and methods for periodic and triggered event reporting via user plane

During positioning of a user equipment (UE), for example, during an emergency call, a civic location of the UE may be determined. For example, during a location session in a wireless network, a UE may detect a WiFi access point (AP) and obtain the civic location of the WiFi AP from the AP. The UE may provide the civic location to a location server in the wireless network, which may treat the civic location as the civic location of the UE. The location server may validate the civic location using a geodetic location, e.g., obtained based on measurements from a satellite positioning system and/or base stations in the wireless network. The location server may further verify that the UE is proximate to the WiFi AP using WiFi positioning measurements performed by the UE. The validated civic location can be provided to an external client, e.g. a PSAP.

Methods and apparatus for enhanced WiFi positioning using civic location for 4G and 5G

A position of a user equipment (UE) may be determined using downlink based solutions (e.g. OTDOA), uplink based solutions (e.g. UTDOA), or combined downlink and uplink based solutions (e.g. RTT). The serving gNBs may request neighboring gNBs to produce downlink reference signal transmissions to a target UE and/or measure uplink reference signal transmissions from the target UE. The serving gNB may receive the uplink reference signal measurements from neighboring gNBs and obtain an own uplink reference signal measurement and forward to the UE or another network entity all the uplink reference signal measurements. The UE may use the uplink reference signal measurements, along with the UE's own downlink reference signal measurements to determine RTTs. The serving gNBs or another entity may keep the uplink reference signal measurements and may determine RTTs after receiving the downlink reference signal measurements from the UE.

System and methods for supporting uplink and downlink positioning procedures in a wireless network

Techniques are described for supporting satellite wireless access for a user equipment (UE) using fixed tracking areas (TAs). TA identities (TAIs) are broadcast in a satellite radio cell by a base station indicating which TAs are covered by the radio cell. A UE can access a radio cell if at least one broadcast TAI is not forbidden for the UE. A base station provides the TAIs broadcast in a radio cell and a TAI for a TA in which a UE is located to a core network node to support access by the UE. The core network node uses the broadcast TAIs to decide whether UE access is allowed and uses the broadcast TAIs and the TAI to assign a UE registration area. The UE may transfer all the broadcast TAIs to a forbidden TAI list if UE access is rejected by the core network node.

Systems and methods for supporting tracking areas for satellite wireless access

Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A user equipment (UE) may receive, from a network entity via a first cell, signaling that indicates a configuration for communicating a reference signal associated with measuring a second cell. The UE may transmit, to the network entity and based on the configuration, a request for a time gap to be included between communications via the first cell and communication of the reference signal. The UE may receive, via the second cell and in response to the request for the time gap, the reference signal in accordance with the time gap. In some examples, the request for the time gap may be communicated via positioning signaling associated with requesting time gaps between the communication of positioning reference signals (PRSs).

According to embodiments, an example method for positioning an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) using a transmitting device in a wireless communications network may comprise configuring the IRS to reflect a wireless reference signal back to the transmitting device and subsequent to configuring the IRS, transmitting the wireless reference signal from the transmitting device to the IRS. The method may also comprise receiving a wireless reflected signal at the transmitting device, wherein the wireless reflected signal comprises a reflection of the wireless reference signal, reflected by the IRS and determining measurements configured for positioning the IRS based at least in part on the wireless reflected signal, wherein a location of the IRS is determined based on the measurements.

Positioning of an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) in a wireless communication network

According to embodiments, an example method of positioning a user equipment (UE) by a location server in a wireless communications network, the method may comprises receiving a request to perform positioning of the UE and receiving a notification from a first base station indicating that a transmission path between the first base station and the UE is via an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS). The method may further comprise responsive, at least in part, to receiving the notification, preventing the positioning of the UE from being based on a reference signal transmitted through the transmission path between the first base station and the UE.

Positioning of a UE is supported in a Radio Resource Control (RRC) Inactive state. The UE receives a request for periodic or triggered location and enters the RRC Inactive state. When an event is detected, the UE sends an RRC Resume Request to a gNB that includes an indication of the event. The indication may be an event report that may include downlink positioning measurements. The gNB forwards the event report to a location server, and may later receive and return an event report acknowledgement to the UE in an RRC Release. The indication may instead trigger uplink positioning, with the base station sending an uplink Sounding Reference Signal (SRS) configuration to the UE in an RRC Release, causing the UE to transmit uplink SRS signals to be measured by gNBs. For uplink related position methods like RTT, the gNB can receive both types of indication.

Method and apparatus for location of a user equipment in an inactive state

A server may obtain wireless network coverage information from crowdsourcing devices, where the wireless network coverage information indicates characteristics of wireless network coverage at different locations along various routes of travel. The server may determine a wireless coverage map of an area based on the wireless network coverage information, where the wireless coverage map comprises, for locations along one or more routes of travel within the area, a respective wireless coverage indication indicative of a level of wireless coverage for wireless networks at the respective location. The server may send route-based coverage information to a mobile device for a particular route, where the route-based coverage information includes the respective wireless coverage indication, from the coverage map, for one or more locations along the particular route.

Certain aspects of the present disclosure provide a method of wireless communication by a user equipment (UE). The method generally includes performing a mobility procedure to establish a connection in a target radio access technology (RAT) while maintaining a context established in a source RAT, wherein one of the source RAT or target RAT is a terrestrial network (TN) RAT and the other is a non-terrestrial network (NTN) RAT and sending a tracking area update (TAU) request after establishing the connection in the target RAT.

Techniques are provided for positioning of a mobile device in a wireless network using directional positioning reference signals (PRS), also referred to as PRS beamforming. In an example method, a plurality of directional PRSs are generated for at least one cell for a base station, such that each of the plurality of directional PRSs comprises at least one signal characteristic and a direction of transmission, either or both of which may be distinct or unique. The plurality of directional PRSs is transmitted within the at least one cell, such that each of the plurality of directional PRSs is transmitted in the direction of transmission. A mobile device may acquire and measure at least one of the directional PRSs which may be identified using the associated signal characteristic. The measurement may be used to assist position methods such as OTDOA and ECID and to mitigate multipath.

Systems and methods to facilitate location determination by beamforming of a positioning reference signal

Uplink high efficiency location of a user equipment (UE) includes initiating periodic or triggered location in the UE by a location server (LS) in a wireless network. The UE enters an idle state and monitors for triggering events. After detecting an event, the UE transmits an uplink positioning signal (UPS) to a base station, where the UPS encodes UPS data comprising a UE ID, an ID for the LS, an authentication code (AC) and location measurements. UPS transmission occurs in an uplink positioning occasion shared with other UEs. The location measurements may be ciphered but other UPS data is unciphered. The base station obtains additional location measurements and transfers the UPS data and the location measurements to the LS. The LS authenticates the UE ID using the AC, determines the UE location using the location measurements and transfers the location to an external client.

Systems and methods for uplink high efficiency location in a wireless network

A method of wireless communication performs a public land mobile network (PLMN) search for a higher priority PLMN. The PLMN search includes a candidate PLMN having a different mobile country code (MCC) than a serving PLMN. The method switches to the higher priority PLMN when the PLMN search locates the higher priority PLMN. A method determines whether a user equipment (UE) has transitioned between an international area and a national area. The method triggers PLMN selection in response to the UE having transitioned between the international area and the national area.

Disclosed are techniques for determining round-trip times (RTTs) between a user equipment (UE) and multiple base stations. In an aspect, the UE transmits an RTT measurement signal whose arrival time is measured by each of the base stations, and each of the base stations returns an RTT response signal whose arrival times are measured by the UE. In another aspect, the base stations each transmit an RTT measurement signal and the UE returns an RTT response signal. The receiver of the RTT measurement signal may include the measured arrival time in a payload of the RTT Response signal. Alternatively, the measured arrival time(s) of the RTT Measurement signal(s) and the transmission time(s) of the RTT Response signal(s) are sent in a separate message. The RTT signals can be wideband signals using low reuse resources.

Systems and methods for multiple round trip time (RTT) estimation in wireless networks

Methods and techniques are described for supporting location services for a user equipment (UE) that is using Narrowband Internet of Things radio access or Cellular Internet of Things features to access a wireless network. The techniques include enabling support for a last known location of a UE, using previously obtained location measurements, when a UE is not reachable from a wireless network for positioning. The techniques also include limiting positioning protocol interaction between a UE and a location server via a reduced maximum message size, reduced message volume and longer response and retransmission timers. The techniques further include enabling a UE to obtain location measurements when not connected to a wireless network, enabling periodic and triggered location of a UE in which a UE evaluates location triggers while not connected to a wireless network, enabling use of deferred location and enabling improved location security.
