In one embodiment, an inkjet printer includes: a first series of print bars arranged along an arc on a first side of an arched printing unit and a second series of print bars arranged along an arc on a second side of the arched printing unit and a dryer positioned within a footprint of the arched printing unit. A plurality of web guides are arranged to guide the web along a duplex printing path past the first print bars for printing on a first side of the web, then through the dryer for drying the first side of the web, then past the second print bars for printing on a second side of the web, and then through the dryer for drying the second side of the web.

An ink set includes a light gray ink, a medium gray ink, and a black ink. Each of the inks in the ink set includes a carboxylic polymer. The light gray ink has a carboxylic polymer load equal to or greater than about 4.27 wt %. The medium gray ink has a carboxylic polymer load ranging from about 2.47 wt % to about 3.47 wt %. The black ink has a carboxylic polymer load ranging from about 0.5 wt % to about 2 wt %.

An ink set includes a red ink and a magenta ink. The red ink includes an effective amount of a red pigment having a predetermined red/green lambda cutoff, and the magenta ink includes an effective amount of a magenta pigment having a predetermined red/green lambda cutoff that is substantially similar to the predetermined lambda cutoff of the red pigment.

An indication of any target point internal to a first color space is received. The target point is rendered in a second color space using one of at least two levels of gray colorant and at most two primary colorants out of three primary colorants in the second color space.

Methods and apparatuses are provided for use in multi-pass printing, which, through the selective ordering of the application of inks to a print media, promote increased dot gain when desired and decreased dot gain when desired. For example, an adaptable print mode method is provided to select between a dark dot gain print mode and an object definition print mode. The dark dot gain print mode causes at least one dark color ink to be selectively applied to a dry portion of a print media. Thereafter, at least one light color ink is selectively applied to the portion of the print media while it is still wet from the application of the dark color ink(s). Conversely, the object definition print mode is configured to cause at least one light color ink to be selectively applied to a dry portion of the print media, and thereafter at least one dark color ink is selectively applied to the portion of the print media while it is still wet from the application of the light color ink(s).
