A polymer melt candle filter having a support which comprises a hollow cylindrical body defined by a first end, a second end, and a cylinder wall having a first end portion and a second end portion. The first end portion includes a screw thread on its outside surface and optionally a hex fitting on its inside surface for receiving a hex wrench. The second end portion includes a plurality of holes in the cylinder wall. The area of the openings of the holes on the outside surface of the cylinder wall may be larger than the area of the openings of the corresponding holes on the inside surface of the cylinder wall. The shape of the openings of the holes on the outside surface may be non-circular. A polymer melt filter plate assembly which comprises (a) a support plate comprising a plurality of threaded holes; (b) at least one filter which is screwed into at least one of the threaded holes via the screw thread on the outside surface of the first end portion of the filter support; (c) a tie rod with (i) a first end extending through a hole in a cone insert and a cap located at the second end of the filter support, and (ii) a second end extending through a threaded hole in the support plate; and (d) a cross bar which is attached to the second end of the tie rod for holding the support plate inside a shaft of an apparatus for filtering a polymer melt.

A process for the manufacture of maleated polypropylenes having an acid number greater than 6, a yellowness index color of no greater than 76, and a number average molecular weight of at least 20,000. The process for making the maleated polypropylenes includes forming a mixture of molten polypropylene and molten maleic anhydride in a reactor, introducing a free radical initiator into the molten mixture to produce a product having maleic anhydride grafted onto the polypropylene, and recovering a high acid number, high molecular weight maleated polypropylene of low color from the reactor.

A process for the manufacture of maleated polypropylenes having an acid number greater than 4.5, a yellowness index color of no greater than 76, and a number average molecular weight of at least 20,000. The process for making the maleated polypropylenes includes forming a mixture of molten polypropylene and molten maleic anhydride in a reactor, introducing a free radical initiator into the molten mixture to produce a product having maleic anhydride grafted onto the polypropylene, and recovering a high acid number, high molecular weight maleated polypropylene of low color from the reactor.

There is disclosed a process for producing films from ethylene-&agr;-olefin interpolymers, which films have, in combination, the properties of improved surface haze, improved stiffness, and improved color. The process involves incorporating from about 0.1 to less than 1% by weight, of a functionalized ethylene homopolymer or functionalized ethylene interpolymer into an ethylene-&agr;-olefin interpolymer-containing composition, and forming a film from the composition.

There is described a process for producing ethylene homopolymers and/or interpolymers and functionalized ethylene homopolymers and/or interpolymers, having reduced melt index ratio (MIR) and reduced weight average molecular weight (Mw). Also disclosed are novel ethylene homopolymers and interpolymers and functionalized ethylene homopolymers and/or interpolymers, having melt index ratio (MIR) less than 22 and molecular weight distribution greater than 2.4. A novel process for preparing functionalized polypropylenes entailing apportioned introduction of free radical initiator is described. Also described are novel functionalized polypropylenes having a yellowness index color of at least 77 and a Brookfield Thermosel viscosity of greater than 7000 cP at 190&deg; C. Preferably, the functionalized polypropylenes are further characterized by having an acid number greater than 6 milligrams of KOH per gram of polymer.

A novel, continuous process for the manufacture of novel higher molecular weight and higher acid numbered maleated polypropylenes with lower color at higher efficiencies involving specified ratios of polypropylene, maleic anhydride, and free radical initiator is described. The novel maleated polypropylenes have an acid number greater than 4.5, a yellowness index color of no greater than 76, and a number average molecular weight of at least 20,000. The process entails continuously forming an intimate mixture of molten polypropylene and molten maleic anhydride at one end of a reactor, continuously introducing a free radical initiator, and continuously removing high acid number high molecular weight maleated polypropylene of low color from the opposite end of the reactor.

Pourable particles of normally soft and tacky plastic materials are formed by extruding the molten plastic material into contact with a cooling fluid containing a non-sticky material that is compatible with the plastic material, cutting the plastic material into particles, separating these particles from the cooling fluid, and contacting these particles with a second compatible non-sticky material.
