An electric power generating system comprising: a generator including an alternator and regulator, the regulator including a normal field control and a redundant field control with a default field command and a selector for selecting between the normal field control and the redundant field control. Further disclosed, is a method of providing excitation to an alternator, comprising: receiving a field default signal indicative of an inoperative normal field control and a normal field command responsive to the normal field control, indicative of a desired duty cycle command to a field coil of an alternator. The method further includes determining if a supply voltage is greater than a selected value and formulating a default field command; transmitting a field drive responsive to the default field command to a field coil of the alternator if the field default signal is asserted.

Redundant field drive for an electric machine

A generator wake-up system that transitions the voltage regulator from a low power, sleep mode to full voltage regulation mode when the wake-up system detects and confirms a valid frequency of rotation of the generator. The wake-up system includes a control circuit to filter, amplify, and detect the proper threshold of an input waveform; and an assessing device that implements a control algorithm to measure and validate the input waveform.

Voltage regulator wake up control using frequency detection

A voltage regulator for control of a vehicle generator. The voltage regulator is selectably responsive to a voltage representing the generator output voltage at the alternator output terminal, or to an external voltage sensed at a load or source point on the vehicle. The voltage regulator determines the relationship between these two sensed voltages and in response thereto chooses one of the sensed voltages for use in controlling the generator output by controlling the field excitation current input thereto. Certain conditions also cause the voltage regulator to latch in a mode where it is controlled only by one of the alternator output terminal voltage or the external voltage. Manual resetting may be required to discontinue the latched operational mode.

Voltage sensing for automotive voltage regulator

A catalytic converter of an engine, such as might be found in an automotive engine system, is capable of being quickly and electrically heated in order to reduce pollution emissions during critical cold start conditions. During cold start conditions, i.e. upon starting the engine, for a predetermined period of time the catalytic converter directly receives electrical power via a quick heating path connecting a catalyst power switch to the catalytic converter. Following the predetermined period of time after which the catalytic converter has been electrically heated, the catalyst power switch is connected to a junction block, such as a starter motor assembly, of the automotive engine system via a normal path.

Generator power electrically heated catalyst system

A high efficiency automotive electrical system and method of control employing an asynchronous induction machine for performing both starting and generating functions. The induction machine is coupled to the engine through a bimodal gearset which operates as a reduction drive during the starting mode and as a direct drive during the generating mode. A computer-based controller responsive to the battery voltage and the speed of the induction machine maintains given voltage/frequency ratios during both starting and generating to provide efficient operation, and smoothly controls the transition between starting and generating modes. The vehicle electrical loads are supplied at one or more stable voltages produced by a load converter powered by the battery.

Automotive electrical system having a starter/generator induction machine

A bridge rectifier for a diode-rectified alternating current generator that is comprised of two metallic heat sinks formed respectively of copper and aluminum that are separated by an electrical insulator. Each heat sink carries a plurality of semiconductor diode chips. The diode chips are electrically connected to electrical connectors that are insert molded to insulator blocks that are supported by one of the heat sinks. The electrical connectors are adapted to be connected to the phase windings of an alternating current generator. The aluminum heat sink has a finned area which is adapted to be contacted by cooling air when the bridge rectifier is mounted in the generator.

Bridge rectifier

A completely self-contained apparatus and associated technique for the manufacture of large fiberglass structures. In a preferred embodiment, the system is designed to manufacture large fiberglass storage tanks for liquids, and is self-contained from the point of view that the machine is capable of performing all manufacturing steps without any auxiliary equipment and may be set up virtually anywhere that can provide a source of electricity and air. The main components of the machine include an operator's carriage which is cantilevered from a rear frame so as to enable same to be inserted into the open end of a large, substantially cylindrical revolving mold having a closed, substantially hemispherical end portion. The carriage includes an overhead canopy for the protection of the operator, as well as fresh air intake and exhaust fans to provide adequate ventilation for the operator. A raw material applicator is positioned in the forward portion of the carriage and is designed to apply the appropriate proportions of chopped fiberglass roving, resin and catalyst to the inner surface of the mold as the carriage reciprocates therein.

The carriage is then backed out of the mold with the upper mold half suspended overhead, and the finished product may then be removed from the lower half of the mold by a gantry crane which forms part of the machine.
