An electrical power generating apparatus () may include a housing (), an electrical generator () within the housing, and a step-up transformer () within the housing and connected to the electrical generator. A turbine () may be provided exterior the housing () to drive the electrical generator (). A barrier wall () may be provided within the housing and () between the electrical generator () and the step-up transformer (), and a fire extinguishing system () may be installed within the housing (). The step-up transformer () may be connected to the electrical generator () without use of an isolated phase bus.

A dynamoelectric machine combining the functions of an exciter, a turning motor, and a starting motor for a turbine. The machine operates in a first mode where the slip between a first stator winding and a first armature winding is positive and thus the magnetic fields interact and operate as a motor to turn the turbine. In a second mode the slip is negative as the turbine turns the shaft and the first stator winding and the first armature operate as an exciter for supplying excitation to the rotating field winding of a main generator.

Methods and systems consistent with the present invention provide improved online detection of one or more shorts in rotor turns () of a field winding () of an electric generator. An initial reference inductance Lis determined by an impedance-measuring circuit (). A subsequent inductance L is determined by the impedance measuring circuit (). A data processing system () compares Lto L to determine whether they differ by a predetermined amount. If Land L differ by the predetermined amount, an alarm is provided to operators to indicate the presence of one or more shorted rotor turns.
