Accessory devices are described herein. An accessory device may include a receptacle for receiving an electronic device. The accessory device may include a case that covers the housing of the electronic device, or a folio that additionally includes a cover can conceal the display of the electronic device. Accessory devices described herein further include wireless circuitry used to communicate with wireless circuitry in the electronic device. The wireless circuitry can be used for various functions and features. For instance, the wireless circuitry in the accessory device can respond to authentication requests from the electronic device, and/or to send authentication requests to the electronic device. Further, the wireless circuitry in the accessory device can send information to the electronic device. Such information may include properties of the accessory device, or information stored on the accessory device that is presented on a display of the electronic device.

A case for an electronic device can include a case body including an exterior surface and an interior surface, the interior surface being positioned opposite the exterior surface. The case can additionally include a button body positioned at least partially within the case body between the exterior surface and the interior surface, the button body being movable inward and outward relative to the case body along an axis of button travel. The case can further include a biasing structure having a contact surface configured to contact the button body, the biasing structure configured to bias the button body toward the interior surface along the axis of button travel.

Electronic devices and accessory devices designed for communication with electronic devices are disclosed. An accessory device suitable for use with an electronic device can receive the electronic device. Subject to authentication, the electronic device can read information stored on the accessory device through respective wireless communication circuitry of the electronic device and the accessory device. For example, the accessory device can store information related to the material makeup of the accessory device, dimensional information of the accessory device, and other integrated features. This information can be read and received by the electronic device. As a result, the electronic device can adjust a control system (that regulates thermal energy generation) by increasing a set point temperature that allows one or more processors to operate in a manner consistent with additional thermal energy generation. However, the accessory device protects the user from exposure to the additional thermal energy, thereby preventing injury.

An electronic device such as a portable electronic device may have display with a capacitive touch sensor. A cover may have a front portion and a rear portion that bend along a bend axis. The front portion may overlap the display when the cover is closed. Conductive structures such as a patterned conductive layer having elongated strips of conductive material separated by gaps or another predetermined pattern may be formed in the front portion of a cover or other portion of a cover that overlaps the display and capacitive touch sensor when the cover is closed. Control circuitry in the device can gather capacitance images with the touch sensor and can detect when the cover has transitioned from open to closed or from closed to open from whether the predetermined pattern becomes present or becomes absent in the capacitance images.

Accessory device with communication features

An accessory device for an electronic device is disclosed. The accessory device may be formed from one or more transparent materials. The accessory device may include a first transparent material coupled to a second transparent material. The first transparent material may provide a rigid structural base, while the second transparent material provides flexibility to depress buttons of the electronic device. An oleophobic coating may be applied to the outer perimeter of the accessory device in order to resist residue build-up. Also, the accessory device may include a camera opening for a camera of the electronic device. The accessory device may be raised around the camera opening, both on an internal and external surface of the accessory device. The surface defining the camera opening may undergo a polishing operation in order to increase light transmission through the transparent materials that form the accessory device.

This application relates to adjusting an operation of a portable electronic device based on the detection of a protective case. A processor of the portable electronic device is configured to receive a signal that indicates the portable electronic device is in contact with and retained by the protective case. Responsive to receiving the signal, the processor is configured to allow the component to transition from a first operating state to a second operating state. The first operating state is associated with a first operating temperature that corresponds to a first temperature range at a surface of a housing for the portable electronic device. The second operating state is associated with a second operating temperature that corresponds to a second temperature range at the surface of the housing. The second operating temperature is greater than the first operating temperature.

A watch band includes a strap and a clasp mechanism integrated with an end of the strap. The clasp mechanism includes a concave member defining a channel at the end of the strap and a cover plate. The cover plate is configured to move between (i) a first position in which the cover plate covers the channel, and (ii) a second position in which the cover plate is retracted to leave at least part of the channel uncovered by the cover plate.

Systems and methods of controlling operation of a connection device associated with a modular computing system are disclosed. For instance, data indicative of a connection between a first connection device and a second connection device can be obtained. The first connection device can be associated with a modular computing device, and the second connection device can be associated with a modular component to be implemented within the modular computing device. Each connection device can include a plurality of connector elements. Data indicative of one or more configuration parameters of the second connection device can be obtained. An operating configuration of the first connection device can be determined based at least in part on the data indicative of the one or more configuration parameters. Operation of the first connection device can be controlled based at least in part on the operating configuration.

Connection device for a modular computing system

This document describes a gas sampling device. The gas sampling device is capable of housing sensors printed on thin film (e.g., paper) and is operable to expose the sensors printed on the thin film to air for a brief period of time to sample the air for smells. The exposure causes a chemical reaction between the sensors and the sampled air and differs depending on the smells of the sampled air. After exposure, an image of the reacted sensor is captured. The image is analyzed according to image processing techniques to recognize the smells of the sampled air. The gas sampling device is also capable of concurrently sampling air from a surrounding environment along with sampling air from a specimen of interest. By analyzing both samples, the smells of the specimen of interest can be distinguished from those of the surrounding environment. Once the smells are ascertained, a profile of chemical groups in gases of the sampled air is output.

In one aspect, the subject matter of the disclosure features a watch band. The watch band includes a strap and a clasp mechanism integrated with an end of the strap. The clasp mechanism includes a concave member defining a channel at the end of the strap and a cover plate. The cover plate is configured to move between (i) a first position in which the cover plate covers the channel, and (ii) a second position in which the cover plate is retracted to leave at least part of the channel uncovered by the cover plate.

Systems and techniques are provided for a dongle for quick release. The plug portion may include electrical contacts to contact electrical contacts housed within the port of the electronic device. An external face may be attached to the plug portion. The external face may include electrical contact pads. The electrical contact pads may be electrically connected to the electrical contacts. A flange may include a ferromagnetic material attached to the external face, such that the flange is disposed outside of the electronic device when the plug portion is plugged into the port of the electronic device.
