An apparatus for determining the total amount of two or more substances in a liquid, at least one of said substances comprising a fluorescent substance, said apparatus comprising: a mass spectrometer device; a fluorometer device; and a processing means; wherein said mass spectrometer device is adapted to obtain a periodic measurement of the total amount of said two or more substances in the liquid, said fluorometer device being adapted to detect the fluorescent response of said at least one fluorescent substance in said liquid to an excitation signal, said processing means being programmed to determine a calibration factor by comparing a measurement obtained by the fluorometer device with said periodic measurement of the total amount of said two or more substances present obtained by the mass spectrometer device, the processing means subsequently using said calibration factor to determine measurements representative of the total amount of both fluorescent and non-fluorescent substances present in the liquid based upon the fluorescent response detected by the fluorometer device.

Apparatus and method for determining the amounts of two or more substances present in a liquid

A method for fabricating a quadrupole mass filter (QMF) or quadrupole ion trap (QIT) capable of generating a hyperbolic electric field. The method comprises: (a) cutting four elongate erodible metal workpieces axially at opposing extremities; (b) parallel mounting the four elongate erodible metal workpieces axially in an elongate slot in an insulating housing in a mutually spaced apart disposition such that an axial bore is formed therebetween whereby a first part of each elongate erodible metal workpiece is freely inward facing and the cutting forms a recess remote from the axis of the insulating housing; (c) electrically connecting the erodible metal workpieces; and (d) generating electrical discharges between the erodible metal workpiece and a wire electrode as the wire electrode passes through the axial bore to erode the erodible metal of the first part of the erodible metal workpiece to a hyperbolic profile.

Method for fabrication of a quadrupole mass filter or quadrupole ion trap using electrode discharge machining

The present invention relates to a process for fabricating a quadrupole mass spectrometer (QMS) component, to a monolithic quadrupole mass spectrometer or a component thereof, to a quadrupole mass filter (QMF) or quadrupole ion trap (QIT) capable of generating a hyperbolic electric field and to a modular quadrupole mass spectrometer (QMS) assembly.

Process

A method of using a telecommunications network cashless transaction service is provided, in which a user accesses the service using a network access instrument, such as a mobile phone which produces a signal. The signal is forwarded to an interface device of the network, which extracts service and user identity data therefrom, and passes the data to a processing unit for the service of the network. The service processing unit processes the data, instructs the interface device to forward the access instrument signal to an input output device of the network, and instructs the input output device to request transaction details from the user. The details are sent to the input output device, which passes them to the service processing unit which processes the details and decides whether or not the transaction can proceed, causes output of a signal conveying acceptance or rejection of the transaction to the user, and, if the transaction can proceed, arranges for the transaction to be carried out. The telecommunications network may comprise a fixed network, the interface device may be a service switching point, the service processing unit may be a service control point, and the input output device may be an interactive/intelligent voice recognition unit.

Method and apparatus for cashless transactions via a telecommunications network

Apparatus and method to improve the filtering action of a quadrupole mass filter by reducing a precursor fault caused by an asymmetric electrical field between a pair of opposing electrode rods in a y-axis of the quadrupole mass filter. Processing means for processing detector data determine the filtering action of the quadrupole mass filter by checking for a precursor fault. If a precursor fault is detected then power supply control means introduce an AC potential difference across the electrode rods in the y-axis in order to reduce asymmetry in the electrical field in the y-axis.
