A cam-controlled core inserter for a surface winder is disclosed. The cam-controlled core insertion device provides for a shaft having a plurality of cam housings disposed thereabout. A cam cooperatively associated with a respective cam housing is disposed within a first surface of each of the cam housings. A fixed finger plate cooperatively associated with a respective cam housing and having a fixed finger fixably attached thereto is juxtaposed proximate to each of the cam housings and fixably attached to the shaft. A cam follower having a finger shaft that has a movable finger attached thereto is cooperatively associated with each of the cams. The distal end of each of the movable fingers and the distal end of each of the fixed fingers are capable of forming a space therebetween for contacting engagement and containment of a core suitable for the convolute disposal of a web material thereabout.

Cam-controlled core inserter for a surface winder

A surface winder for winding a log of web material convolutely about a core is disclosed. The surface winder has a frame providing the web material with a path therethrough, a first winding roll rotatably mounted in the frame on one side of the path, a stationary finger mounted on the frame on the other side of the path adjacent the first winding roll and spaced therefrom a distance sufficient to receive the core to be wound in the path, the first winding roll cooperating with the stationary finger means to rotate the core, a cam-controlled core insertion device for a surface winder, and a second winding roll rotatably mounted in the frame on the other side of the path and downstream in the direction of web advance from the stationary finger means and forming a nip with the first winding roll.

The present disclosure is directed to a fibrous core comprising a fluted layer; and a liner disposed on the fluted layer. The fluted layer and the liner are helically wound defining a longitudinal core axis.

The present disclosure is directed to a method for manufacturing a fibrous core comprises: providing a strip comprising at least one liner, and at least one fluted layer, wherein the strip has a leading edge, a trailing edge, a first strip face, a second strip face, and a strip axis substantially parallel to at least one of the leading edge and the trailing edge; feeding the strip to a mandrel having a central longitudinal axis extending in a longitudinal direction; winding the strip onto the mandrel such that the leading edge of the strip overlaps the trailing edge of the strip to form a fibrous core comprising an inner surface, an outer surface, and a longitudinal core axis; and adhering the leading edge to the trailing edge of the strip to from an overlap portion having an overlap width.

Method of manufacturing fibrous cores

A cam-controlled core inserter for a surface winder is disclosed. The device has a cam housing having a longitudinal axis, a cam disposed within a first surface of the cam housing, a fixed finger plate juxtaposed proximate to the cam housing and the cam, and a first cam follower cooperatively associated with the cam. The fixed finger plate has a fixed finger fixably attached thereto. The first cam follower has a finger shaft disposed through the fixed finger plate and has a movable finger attached thereto. The movable finger has an adjustable orientation relative to the longitudinal axis as the first cam follower orbits about the longitudinal axis. The distal end of the movable finger and the distal end of the fixed finger are capable of forming a space therebetween for contacting engagement and containment of a core suitable for the convolute disposal of a web material thereabout.
