There are provided novel miscible blend compositions comprising (a) a cellulose ester and (b) a vinylphenol containing polymer. The blends do not exhibit large scale phase separation and provide properties which are essentially intermediate between those of either cellulose ester or vinylphenol containing polymers. The blends are useful for both molded and film applications as well as for coatings.

Blends of cellulose esters and arylene-bis(diaryl phosphate) compounds are described. The blends are useful for preparing film or other molded objects. The blends can possess several desirable properties such as flame-retardation, plasticization, formulaic stabilization and dimensional stabilization.

A method of producing prepolymeric materials from lignin is disclosed. The method uses lignin which has been hydroxyalkyl modified, such that the lignin is substantially non-phenolic and solvent soluble and/or liquid. The modified lignin is reacted with materials which yield prepolymers which may be polymerized according to known methods to produce useful polymers.

The invention describes the preparation and use of cellulose esters grafted with silicon-containing thiol pendent groups which can serve as crosslinking agents during free radical polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated materials. The grafted cellulose esters provide a crosslinked polymeric network with enhanced solvent resistance and hardness properties when used in conjunction with ethylenically unsaturated materials.
