A controller receives a new resource request from a user equipment associated with a first talk group. The new resource request is a request for an assignment of one of MBMS resources and unicast resources for user equipment associated with the first talk group. The controller identifies a second geographical area in which members of the first talk group are located, determines that MBMS resources are available in the second geographical area, and determines whether the first talk group is an MBMS eligible talk group in the second geographical area. In response to determining that the first talk group is an MBMS eligible talk group in the second geographical area, the controller assigns MBMS resources to the first talk group; otherwise, the controller assigns unicast resources to the first talk group.

A method and services network element are provided that provide for queued admissions control in a wireless communication system by receiving a bearer establishment request associated with a user equipment, determining that a cell where the user equipment is located is congested, in response to determining that the cell is congested, creating a bearer establishment request record (BERR) associated with the user equipment and the bearer establishment request, wherein the BERR comprises priority information associated with the BERR, and adding the BERR to a queue, wherein the queue is associated with a cell serving the user equipment, wherein the BERR is positioned in the queue based on the priority information, and wherein bearer establishment requests associated with BERRs in the queue are submitted based on a position of the BERRs in the queue.

Method and apparatus for queued admissions control in a wireless communication system

A method, apparatus () and system () for altering the playback speed of recorded content () to match a target syllable rate is provided. A user may enter a desired, target playback syllable rate through a user interface (), such as a keypad or touch screen. Alternatively, the target playback syllable rate may be determined from identification of the source of the recorded content (). An actual playback syllable rate () associated with the recorded content () is then determined. The recorded content () is then altered, by time domain harmonic scaling in one embodiment, such that the altered playback speed () substantially matches the target playback syllable rate. In so doing, a listener is able to receive recorded content () at a faster or slower rate than it is produced. Elements that may compromise the intelligibility of the recorded content (), including distortion (), background noise (), ambient noise () and audible intonations (), may be measured such that the target playback syllable rate may be compensated.

Method and apparatus for processing a communication signal based on the geographical location of a communication device

A communication device (106) transmits a data packet at a first transmission time or during a first transmission time period to a data controller (116). The data controller determines an earliest transmission time or time period of data packets to be acknowledged and transmits an indication that only data packets transmitted after the earliest transmission time or time period will be acknowledged. The communication device then determines whether the data controller is indicating that only data packets transmitted after the first transmission time or time period will be acknowledged. When the data controller is indicating that only data packets transmitted after the first transmission time or time period will be acknowledged, the communication device retransmits at least a portion of the data packet and thereby performs timerless error recovery.

A signal quality estimator (810) processes the path metrics and signal strength estimates for each of the received trellises and produces a received signal quality estimate (814), the received signal quality estimate being indicative of a signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio, a bit error rate, or a block error rate. This approach is well-suited for use with schemes having high-order symbol constellations. When incorporated into an RF transceiver 700, the received signal quality estimate can be used in the selection of an encoding scheme best adapted to ongoing RF channel conditions.

The communication device (200) has a particular portion (244) subject to an increase in temperature resulting from the transmissions. A message is provided for transmission by the communication device (200) which has a data communication protocol (224) governing message transmission. Temperature control is effected by determining temperature information for the particular portion (244) of the communication device (200) and by modifying operation of the data communication protocol (224) based in part on the temperature information.
