A duplex slitter scorer mounted on a single pivoted sub-carrier is provided with a single power adjusting apparatus disposed entirely below the paper feed path. The adjusting apparatus includes a single rotatable lead screw to position a common carrier mounting first and second relatively movable adjusting arms that are selectively engageable in sequence with the slitting and creasing heads. The lead screw axis is fixed transversely and both adjusting arms are retractable to permit indexing of the pivoted sub-carrier. To compensate for paper weave, the sub-frame is moved along its pivot axis. The lead screw is fixed against longitudinal movement but is partially controlled by a signal indicative of sub-carrier position along its pivot axis so that the instantaneous position of the adjusting apparatus common carrier is related to the instantaneous position of the sub-frame along its pivot axis.

Automatic slitter

A glue applicating means is constructed with an elongated shoe floatingly mounted alongside of and urged toward a glue applicator roll by a fluid controlled biasing means. A longitudinally extending depression in the shoe is substantially closed by the glue roll to define a glue cavity to which glue is fed by a positive displacement pump. The shoe is mounted so that the downstream end of the shoe is movable away from the glue roll automatically as required to permit glue to exit from the cavity at the same rate it is supplied thereto. This provides what is effectively a self-adjusting nozzle or metering slot extending the full length of the shoe and through which glue is forced from the cavity to form a thin layer of uniform thickness on the outside of the glue roll.

Adhesive metering device

A method for producing corrugated board utilizes a glue applying means constructed with an elongated shoe floatingly mounted alongside of and urged toward a glue applicator roll by a fluid controlled biasing means. A longitudinally extending depression in the shoe is substantially closed by the glue roll to define a glue cavity to which glue is fed by a positive displacement pump. The shoe is mounted so that the downstream end of the shoe is movable away from the glue roll automatically as required to permit glue to exit from the cavity at the same rate it is supplied thereto. This provides what is effectively a self-adjusting nozzle or fluid distribution slot extending the full length of the shoe and through which glue is forced from the cavity to form a thin layer of uniform thickness on the outside of the glue roll. The latter applies such thin layer of glue directly to the flute tip of a corrugated web for joining a liner web to the corrugated web.

Adhesive metering device for corrugating processes

A single facer is provided with an adjustable width glue means including an elongated floating shoe having doctor blade means biased toward a glue applicator roll and movable away from the latter to form a metering gap through which glue exits from an elongated fluid cavity of the shoe as a thin film on the applicator roll. The shoe also includes an elongated fluid manifold which receives glue under pressure from a glue supply. A plurality of passages formed in the shoe and spaced along the length thereof interconnect the fluid cavity and manifold so that glue flows to the former from the latter. Longitudinally adjustable side dams are provided for the cavity and manifold to control the width of the glue film. A cleaning fluid introduced at the ends of the manifold flushes through those passages outboard of the dams and exits at the ends of the cavity to prevent build-up of glue in the shoe.

Fluid metering device

A duplex slitter is provided with two stationary stations each having one or more pairs of drive shafts rotated on fixed centers and carrying a plurality of slitting and creasing head pairs. Each station is provided with a single mechanism for power adjustment of all head pairs. The mechanism is movable the entire length of the shafts and is selectively engageable and disengageable with each head pair. After the head pairs are in desired longitudinal positions along the shafts, the adjusting mechanism is parked at one end of the shafts outboard of the web path or working area of the station.
