The subject system allows a source device providing a content stream over a network connection to a sink device to adaptively bypass a transcoding portion of a content processing pipeline when the original content stream, e.g. the non-transcoded content stream, can be decoded by the sink device and/or when no actions that utilize transcoding have been requested for the content stream. The source device may power down the transcoding portion of the content processing pipeline when the transcoding portion is not in use. When an action that utilizes transcoding is requested, and the transcoding portion of the pipeline is being bypassed, the source device may power on the transcoding portion and adaptively modify the pipeline to pass the content stream through the transcoding portion. The source device may provide configuration messages to the sink device when the pipeline is modified to provide information for decoding the transcoded content stream.

Adaptive transcoding bypass system

The subject system allows electronic devices in an infrastructure network to discover direct peer-to-peer services, such as screencasting, access to peripheral devices, etc., that can be provided over the infrastructure network. Since the electronic devices already have a layer two (link layer) connection with each other over the infrastructure network, pre-association device and/or service discovery protocols, such as those provided by Wi-Fi Direct and the like, are not available to the electronic devices. Thus, the subject system provides a post-association mechanism that allows the electronic devices to query, advertise, discover, and access direct peer-to-peer services over the infrastructure network. Furthermore, the subject system extends access of the direct peer-to-peer services to wired networks, such as Ethernet networks, Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA) networks, powerline networks, and the like.

Discovery of services over infrastructure networks

Power management techniques for a network device providing services to other network devices. In one embodiment, a first device communicates requests for access to and release of a resource (such as a media serving service) hosted by a second device. Power management functionality in the second device selectively controls power to the resource based, at least in part, on such requests. For example, a resource may be placed in an inactive state following receipt of a request for release of the resource. Access to the resource may be provided through a network interface that is separately activated or deactivated by the power management functionality. In further embodiments, information relating to the state of the resource and/or network interface is provided by a proxy device.

Service based power management in a network

The subject system allows network devices utilizing any number of networking technologies (including to-be-developed technologies) to access a common abstraction layer and/or the network operations facilitated by a common abstraction layer. The subject system allows a device that is added to a network to communicate whether existing devices on the network should retrieve communication protocol information for facilitating communication with the added device from a remote server. For example, the devices may locally store communication protocol information for certain network technologies, e.g. legacy network technologies, while information corresponding to other network technologies may not be locally stored. The added device may provide a resource locator to the existing devices for accessing the communication protocol information from the remote server. The existing network devices may retrieve the communication protocol information via the resource locator, and may utilize the communication protocol information to facilitate communication with the added device.

Extensible interoperability of network devices

Apparatus and methods for reducing latency in coordinated networks are provided. The apparatus and methods relate to a protocol that may be referred to as the Persistent Reservation Request ('p-RR'), which may be viewed as a type of RR (reservation request). p-RR's may reduce latency, on average, to one MAP cycle or less. A p-RR may be used to facilitate Ethernet audiovisual bridging. Apparatus and methods of the invention may be used in connection with coaxial cable based networks that serve as a backbone for a managed network, which may interface with a package switched network.

Apparatus and methods for reduction of transmission delay in a communication network

A network user priority assignment system ('NUPAS') for assigning network user priorities on a network is described. The NUPAS may include a host and a gateway in signal communication with the host. The host may be configured to transmit a request message signal and the gateway may be configured to receive the transmitted request signal and in response generate an acknowledgement signal having a traffic descriptor.

A technique of using a remote control device to identify a source for transferring content on a home network, a renderer for rendering the content and a pathway within a home network to couple the source to the renderer to transfer the content. The remote control device then transmits control information to the source to set a control parameter value within the source to send the content and transmits control information to the renderer to set a control parameter value within the renderer to receive the content. The commands from the remote configure parameter values associated with a media layer in the source and/or the renderer to initiate a hand-shake to effect the content transfer, so that the source and the renderer need not initiate the hand-shake between themselves.

Remote control device transaction setup in a home network

A premises based multimedia communication system includes a source device that produces multimedia content, a rendering device that presents the multimedia content, and a premises communication network coupling the source device to the rendering device. The system determines a bit error rate of the premises communication network, transfers the multimedia content from the source device to the rendering device, and when the bit error rate exceeds a bit error rate threshold, the system at least partially disables link layer encryption of video frames of the multimedia content transfer. With the link layer operations at least partially disabled, the system can enable, at least partially, content layer encryption operations for the transfer of the multimedia content from the source device to the rendering device.

Varying home network encryption techniques

A Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) system based upon peer-to-peer communications. A wireless terminal for peer-to-peer communications acts either as a WLAN master or as a WLAN slave. When the wireless terminal acts a master, the wireless terminal undertakes mastering duties that include transmitting a beacon interval in the frame cycle. When the wireless terminal is not tethered to a power source, mastering duties alternate according to a round-robin WLAN mastering cycle, wherein the wireless terminal acts the WLAN master during at least one frame cycle and acts the WLAN slave during other frame cycles to conserve an untethered power source of the wireless terminal.

Low power protocol for wireless terminal peer-to-peer communications

A wireless station within a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) includes a processor, a radio and a directional antenna. The radio gathers participatory data based on communications involving the wireless station and non-participatory data based on communications the wireless station listens to, but does not participate in. The processor produces an operational report based on the participatory data and the non-participatory data and provides the operational report to the WLAN. The processor further alters a gain vector of the directional antenna based on instructions received from the WLAN in response to the operational report.

Systems and methods for managing distribution of three dimensional visual media to a plurality of displays. For example, there is a content server for managing distribution of three dimensional (3D) visual media to a client over a. network, where the client has a display. The content server comprises a server processor configured to determine a plurality of supported 3D) modes of the client, enable one the plurality of supported 3D modes, and provide the 3D visual media to the client for presentation on the display of the client.

Systems and methods for managing distribution of 3D media

Methods and systems for enabling communication of information within a network are disclosed herein and comprise receiving at a first communication device located within a network, configuration information from a network service provider for configuring a plurality of communication devices located within said network. The first communication device located within the network can be configured based on at least a portion of the received configuration information. In response to a user input at a second communication device located within the network, at least a portion of the received configuration information can be communicated from the first communication device to the second communication device located within the network. The network service provider can be coupled to the first communication device via a wired connection. The network can comprise a wireless network.

Minimum intervention authentication of heterogeneous network technologies (MIAHNT)

Methods and systems for controlling network traffic in a network are disclosed herein and may include monitoring network traffic characteristics for a plurality of communication channels in a home network, by at least one processor within the home network. The at least one processor may re-route network traffic for at least a portion of the plurality of communication channels in the home network, based on analysis by the at least one processor of at least the monitored network traffic characteristics. Network traffic can be estimated for at least a portion of the plurality of communication channels in the home network by the at least one processor within the home network, based on the monitored network traffic characteristics. The at least one processor may re-route network traffic for a portion of the plurality of communication channels in the home network, based on the estimated network traffic.

A premises based multimedia communication system includes a source device that produces multimedia content, a rendering device that presents the multimedia content, and a premises communication network coupling the source device to the rendering device. The source device receives data packets carrying the multimedia content from the remote content source via at least one remote delivery communication network and transmits at least two copies of the data packets carrying video frames of the multimedia content to the rendering device via the at least one premises communication network. The rendering device decodes video frames carried by first copies of the data packets. Upon an unsuccessful decoding of the video frames carried by the first copies of the data packets, the rendering device decoding video frames carried by second copies of the data packets and upon a successful decoding of the video frames carried by the first copies of the data packets, the rendering device discards video frames carried by second copies of the data packets.
