Techniques, apparatuses, and systems for interfacing multiple sensors with a biological system can include amplifying signals from respective sensors associated with an external device; modulating the amplified signals based on respective different frequency values; and summing the modulated signals to produce an output signal to stimulate a biological system.

Embedded microelectromechanical systems sensor and related devices and methods

A portable collapsible ventilator that is used to direct air currents into a boat hatch, recreational vehicle vent, or other opening in an enclosed space while, at the same time shielding that opening from the intrusion of rain and direct sunlight. The ventilator has a frame of hinged, flexible rods covered with a water repellent fabric with an opening at one end. The ventilator is erected into a freestanding unit by pushing down on the hinge point of the flexible rods and locking them in position with a locking mechanism to form a semi-circular shape. A rod is inserted between the front and center hinge points to extend the open end of the device forward into a rain and sun shielding position. The ventilator is then positioned over the opening to be ventilated and secured in place with attached shock cords. When not in use, the ventilator is collapsed into an elongated shape with the flexible rods aligned and the cover folded around them to enable insertion into a storage bag.

A security device in the form of optically variable waveguides that produce color shifts at particular exit viewing angles. Wavelength filtering in the cladding layers using interference coatings and colorants produces waveguide modes of different colors. These optical devices can be incorporated within currency paper, gaming chips or credit cards to help determine their genuineness.

A visual display dependent upon the use of thermochromic materials is formed as a thin structure on a substrate sheet with a vapor deposited conductive film heater applied thereto. The current is applied to the heater through parallel opposed buss bars so that the heater heats uniformly. A non-thermochromic image layer is mounted on the substrate, with one or more thermochromic image layers thereover. One thermochromic image layer covers a first portion of a visible display area of the substrate, while a second thermochromic layer covers a second portion of the visible display area, with the first and second portions overlapping slightly along contiguous edges thereof. As the display is heated and cooled, the thermochromic materials of the thermochromic image layers reach their respective transition temperatures to change state from opaque to colorless or vice-versa, or from one color to another. The visual display is mounted within an enclosure to protect the display from environmental interference and thereby insure the desired control of heating of the display, as well as cooling thereof.

Display apparatus using thermochromic material

An auto response phone system is provided that allows a user to automatically screen calls and respond without even talking into a telephone receiver. In one embodiment of the invention the system is built into a conventional telephone. In an alternative embodiment the system is built into a separate case and operates as an accessory. The system stores several messages in non-volatile electronic format. The user picks up the phone when called to identify the caller. The user can then speak to the caller or automatically send one of the pre-recorded messages. A special night button automatically gives a night time message and disables the telephone ringer. If the caller sends a predetermined sequence of touch tones the user's ringer is re-activated to permit emergency calls to be answered. A monitor capability allows the user to monitor all telephone transactions.

To detect a physical parameter, a resonator is connected to a body which changes in dimension when subjected to the parameter. Thus, when the body changes in dimension in response to the parameter, the resonance frequency of the resonator is modulated thereby. Such modulations are detected optically to detect and measure the parameter. In the preferred embodiment, the resonator transmits light and light is applied to the resonator so that the light supplied is transmitted through the resonator and so that the modulations of the resonance frequency also modulates the intensity of the light transmitted by the resonator. The modulations of the intensity of the light transmitted by the resonator is detected to detect the parameter.

Sensors for detecting electromagnetic parameters utilizing resonating

To detect a physical parameter such as pressure, temperature, acceleration or force, the physical parameter is allowed to influence the movement of a light transmitting piezoelectric member. Light is supplied to the member and the member is vibrated in a direction transverse to the light transmitted in the member. The vibrations of the member are modulated by the physical parameter. The modulations of the vibrations modulate the light transmitted by the member. The modulations of the light transmitted by the member are then detected to detect the physical parameter. In some embodiments the physical parameter causes nonvibrational relative motion between two flexible light transmitting members. The change in the amount of light transmitted between the two members is detected for detecting the physical parameter.

Optical sensors for detecting physical parameters utilizing vibrating

To measure the heat transfer coefficient of a sample, an element with temperature sensitive optical properties is placed in contact or implanted in the sample. The element is heated or cooled. The temperature difference between the element and the unheated sample and the rate of heating or cooling indicate the heat transfer coefficient of the sample. In one embodiment, the element is heated or cooled at a constant rate. The heat transfer coefficient of the sample is then inversely related to the difference in temperature between the element and the unheated sample. Alternatively, the element may be heated or cooled at such a rate that the temperature difference between the element and the unheated sample remains substantially constant. The heat transfer coefficient of the sample then varies directly with the rate of heating or cooling. The heat transfer coefficient of a sample is a measure of its composition and other physical properties. The composition of gasses, liquids, the presence of bubbles in a liquid, and fluid levels can be detected by the optical technique. Pressure and flow rates of fluids can also be detected. The technique can be used also to more accurately measure the thermal conductivity and temperature of small objects with small heat capacities.

Fiber optic thermal anemometer

A type element interchange mechanism is incorporated into a high speed serial printer with rotary print wheel and linear carriage movement. A number of print wheels are selectively mountable onto a carriage, which carries a print wheel, print hammer, and print hammer solenoid, from one or more removable carousels, each carousel typically carrying several different type font print wheels. Print wheels are transferred directly between the carriage and a carousel, without the necessity of intermediate transfer mechanisms or steps, through the controlled linear translation of the carriage and the carousel. The print wheel-carrying carousel has a plurality of arms and is rotated to present the desired arm in position for transfer of a print wheel with the carriage. Microprocessor controls are provided so that print wheel changes are implemented automatically in response to input signals defining the desired font type. A computer controlled initialization program is provided which in addition to providing a startup and reset procedure also automatically identifies the print wheel identification numbers by reading coded slots located in the center hub of the print wheels.
