A sleep posture monitor and alarm system detects one or more of four possible sleep positions and sounds an alarm when an individual wearing the apparatus assumes one or more of the detected positions. In addition, interface units for providing a monitoring output of the device to a polysomnograph are included as well as circuitry to record the commutative total time spent by the individual when in the selected positions.

Sleep posture monitor and alarm system

A method and apparatus are provided in which an REM sleep state is accurately identified by detecting and counting a selectable number of eye movements within a selectable time interval. A body movement sensor is used to prevent false indications of REM sleep by inhibiting such indication upon sensing of body movement. An eye movement sensor which uses IR light transmission across an eye is disclosed.

Rapid eye movement sleep state detector

A device for awakening a sleeping person when the sleeping person attempts to sleep in a particular sleep posture includes a sensor, a time-delay circuit, and an alarm or other device for generating a stimulus for awakening the person. The time-delay circuit is designed such that it activates the alarm only when the sensor indicates the person is in the particular sleep posture for a predetermined period of time and also stops the alarm when the person stops sleeping in the particular sleep posture. The device can also be used for monitoring the sleeping person's sleep posture for diagnostic purposes.

A monitor system is provided for a device used in the treatment of sleep apnea. The device engages the user's tongue in a socket. The tongue is thereby held in a forward position, increasing the size of the air passageway, while at the same time flow of air through the mouth is blocked. The monitor is responsive to the position of the tongue in the socket and activates an alarm when the tongue slips out of the socket. One example of such a monitor includes circuitry with a thermistor. Thermistor temperature changes are used to generate a voltage that enables alarm and recording circuitry.
