A method for updating an imaging device is described comprising, receiving update information comprising a compatibility update filter indicating which generations of supply item are compatible with the imaging device, and updating a compatibility filter of the imaging device based on the update information, the compatibility filter configured to control which generations of supply item are classified as compatible with the imaging device. An imaging device is also described that comprises firmware and a memory, the memory storing a compatibility filter configured to control which generations of supply item are classified as compatible, wherein the firmware is configured to read the compatibility filter, and the imaging device is configured to update the compatibility filter. Finally, an imaging device supply item is also described.

Methods for updating an electronic device

A supply item has toner for use in an imaging device. A chip has memory storing quanta indicating allowed usage of the supply item over its lifetime and a multiplier correlating the quanta to toner mass. The imaging device requires quanta to conduct imaging operations and loads the quanta and multiplier by way of a certificate stored in the memory. The imaging device retrieves quanta from the chip over time and both devices keep tally. Initialization between the supply item and imaging device includes providing encrypted and unencrypted instances of firmware versions and certificates from the supply item that the imaging device can compare for security. Alternatively, the supply item defines a fuser assembly, imaging unit, intermediate transfer member, or other component installed for use in the imaging device.

Method of setting up electrical communications between an imaging device and a supply item

An example method for restricting read access to content in the component circuitry and securing data in the supply item is disclosed. The method identifies the status of a read command, and depending upon whether the status disabled or enabled, either blocks the accessing of encrypted data stored in the supply chip, or allows the accessing of the encrypted data stored in the supply chip.

A method and apparatus for configuring an electronics device. The method includes receiving, by the electronics device, a request for a command to perform a predetermined operation by the electronics device and sending the command in response to receiving the request. The electronics device then receives a signature based upon the command, whereupon the electronics device verifies the signature by the electronics device and, following an affirmative verification, executes the command for performing the predetermined operation. In this way, the electronics device may be reconfigured remotely without knowledge of the particular command for performing the predetermined operation by the electronics device.

A multi-color ink tank includes certain features that properly interface with features on a printhead and carrier support structure to operatively seat the ink tank in the carrier support structure in a sealed flow communicative relationship with the printhead. A system and method for suppression of air bubble generation in the ink supply and nozzles of an ink-containing printer cartridge when ultrasonic welding is performed on the ink-containing printer cartridge. The printer cartridge has a top end and a bottom end, and the bottom end includes at least one ink outlet for the ink within the printer cartridge. The system includes a mounting fixture having a recess for receiving and holding at least the lower end of the printer cartridge, an ultrasonic welding device for welding an article to the printer cartridge, and a fluid or liquid, such as water, collected in the bottom of the recess in sufficient quantity such that the at least one ink outlet on the bottom end of the printer cartridge is immersed in the fluid or liquid. The welding device is preferably an ultrasonic welding horn that typically welds a lid to the top end of an ink-containing printer cartridge. The method of performing ultrasonic welding upon the ink containing printer cartridge includes the steps of placing the bottom end of the printer cartridge into the recess of a mounting fixture, immersing the at least one ink outlet within a fluid or liquid in the recess, and ultrasonically welding an article to the printer cartridge.
