Provided is a process for purifying an aqueous solution, wherein the aqueous solution comprises one or more sugars and additionally comprises furfural, hydroxymethylfurfural, or a mixture thereof; wherein the process comprises passing the aqueous solution through a collection of resin particles; and wherein the resin particles comprise covalently bound acid functional groups.

Purifying aqueous solutions

A process of separating carboxylic acids comprising two steps. The first step is to provide an aqueous solution comprising (i) one or more mono-carboxylic acids, (ii) one or more di-carboxylic acids, and (iii) one or more tri-carboxylic acids. The second step is to pass the aqueous solution through a collection of resin particles, where the resin particles comprise covalently bound quaternary ammonium groups, and wherein the collection of resin particles has uniformity coefficient of 1.5 or less.

A chromatographic method for separating a sugar from a sugar-containing liquid feed mixture by: contacting the liquid feed mixture with a stratum of cation exchange resin comprising a crosslinked copolymer matrix functionalized with sulfonic acid groups, and recovering a first product stream from the stratum that has a higher purity of the sugar than present in the liquid feed mixture. The method is characterized by the stratum of cation exchange resin including: i) at least 80 wt % of cation exchange resin including alkaline earth counter ions, and ii) at least 5 wt % of cation exchange resin including alkali earth counter ions.
