A communication apparatus and a communication device that are selectively connectable to each other. A transmitter, associated with one of the communication apparatus and the communication device, transmits a first predetermined signal, such as, for example, an MS signal, to designate a specific mode to the other one of the communication apparatus and the communication device. The first predetermined signal includes an identification field that stores modulation independent information and a standard information field that stores modulation dependent information. A receiver receives a second predetermined signal, such as, for example, an ACK signal or a NACK signal, in response to the first predetermined signal from the other one of the communication apparatus and the communication device.

Activation of multiple xDSL modems with implicit channel probe

A communication apparatus and method utilizing a Digital Subscriber Line (xDSL) modem that is selectively connected to a central communication apparatus to perform a full duplex communication. A communicator transmits a plurality of Mode Request (MR) signals to the central communication apparatus. The plurality of MR signals requesting that the central communication apparatus respond by transmitting a plurality of Mode Select (MS) signals to the communication apparatus. The plurality of MS signals designate a particular communication mode. First frequencies utilized by the plurality of MR signals and second frequencies utilized by the plurality of MS signals belong to a mutually different band. Further, the plurality of MR signals carry identical data with an identical timing, but have different carrier frequencies.

Method for performing a startup session to establish a communication session between a remote communication system and a central communication system. A start-up procedure is initiated by one of the remote communication system and the central communication system. The remote communication system selects one of a full duplex operating mode and a half duplex operating mode in response to a request by the central communication system. The remote communication system and the central communication system then exchange data representing a capability of at least one communication standard that is usable by each communication system to select a mutually compatible communication standard, so that the remote communication system can initiate the communication session using the acknowledged full duplex or half duplex operating mode.

A central communication apparatus that minimizes a retransmission of messages when an error message is received during a communication handshaking procedure. A receiver receives messages from a remote communication terminal during the communication handshaking procedure to detect whether an error message exists. If a predetermined number of error messages are detected by the receiver, a communication terminating section terminates a communication session.

Retransmission procedure and apparatus for handshaking protocol

A communication apparatus that is selectively connected to a central communication apparatus. The communication apparatus transmits CLR signals to the central communication apparatus that indicates a plurality of capabilities list of the communication apparatus, and also requests that the central communication apparatus transmit a capabilities list of the central communication apparatus to the communication apparatus. Upon receipt of a CL signals from the central communication apparatus that indicates a capabilities list of the central communication apparatus, the communication apparatus transmits ACK signals or MS signals to the central communication apparatus that designates a particular communication mode.

Method for terminating a startup session of a full duplex or half duplex communication to be established between a central terminal and the remote terminal. When predetermined data is transmitted upon reception of an ACK message transmitted by one of the central or remote terminals, a data transmission in the startup session is suspended. If the other one of the central or remote terminals receives the predetermined data and thereafter detects a predetermined period of silence, the startup session is terminated.

A first communication device that is connectable to a second communication device. The first communication device includes a negotiation data transmitter that transmits negotiation data with a first group of frequencies to the second communication device. The first communication device includes a negotiation receiver that receives negotiation data with a second group of frequencies from the second communication device. In response to the received MS signal, the transmitter transmits an ACK signal or a NACK signal to the central communication apparatus.

An initiating communication device includes a parameter indicating device, a measurement receiving section, a parameter receiving device, a measurement transmission section, and a selecting device. The parameter indicating device transmits first transmission parameters that can be used by a responding communication device. In response to the transmitted first transmission parameters, the measurement receiving section receives first signals issued by the responding communication device. The parameter receiving device receives second transmission parameters that are issued by the responding communication device. The measurement transmission section functions to transmit second signals to the responding communication device, in response to the received second transmission parameters. The selecting device transmits power level parameters that can be used by said responding communication device in response to said received second signals.

Method and apparatus for minimizing a retransmission of messages when an error message is received during a communication handshaking procedure. A receiver, that detects an error message during the communication handshaking procedure, receives messages from a communication apparatus. When the receiver detects the error message, a retransmission requester transmits a retransmission request message to the communication apparatus.

Apparatus and method for establishing a communication link. A negotiation data transmitting section, associated with an initiating communication device, transmits carriers to a responding communication device. A negotiation data receiving section, associated with the plurality of initiating communication devices, receives carriers from the responding communication device, in response to the transmitted carriers. A selecting device selects an appropriate communication device from the plurality of communication devices, in accordance with the responding communication device, in order to establish a communication channel.

A communication apparatus at a remote location is connectable to a communication apparatus at a central location. The apparatus includes a negotiation data transmitter that transmits negotiation data to the communication apparatus at the central location. The negotiation data includes an identification field that includes at least modulation independent information, a standard information field that includes at least modulation dependent information, and a non-standard information field that includes information other than information associated with the identification field and information associated with the standard information field.
