In a method and apparatus for cleaning the front surface of a mounted lens a web is moved to a lowered position against the lens. A first segment of the web is then slackened. The first segment of web is then rubbed against the lens. Following the rubbing the web is pulled taut while the web is still in the lowered position. A second segment of web can be wiped against the lens while the web is held taut. The first segment can be wet and the second segment dry.

A pinch quill has a shank and a core and sheath apparatus. The core is rotatable about a longitudinal axis. The core has a recess sector and an adjoining recess sector. The chock sector has a greater radial dimension than the recess sector. The sheath is mounted coaxially over the core. The sheath is rotatable with the core about the axis. The sheath has an outer face, an inner face, and a longitudinal slot extending between the faces. The slot narrows to a throat at the inner face. The inner face includes a grip surface spaced apart from the throat. The grip surface is longitudinally aligned with the sectors. The sheath is pivotable about the axis between first and second angular orientations relative to the core. The slot is radially aligned with the chock sector at the first angular orientation. The grip surface is radially aligned with the chock sector at an intermediate angular orientation relative to the core. The intermediate angular orientation is between the first and second angular orientations. The core and sheath grip a filmstrip or other media strip in a quill-strip unit and method. A winder includes the pinch quill and a drive.

Mounting of a solid state imaging sensor in a film scanner support body with an axis of the sensor in precision alignment with a scan axis of the scanner. The sensor is precision mounted on a support frame forming part of a sensor package with the sensor axis aligned with a line of sensor leads extending from the sensor support frame. The sensor package is then mounted on a scanner support body with the sensor leads abuting an insulator material reference datum surface that holds the sensor axis in precision alignment relative to a film scan axis.

Orientation of a removable film gate with a docking frame is accomplished by a releasable locator connector assembly in conjunction with a force-responsive clamp assembly. The locator connector assembly includes a male connector subassembly on the removable film gate and a female connector subassembly located on the docking frame. A spring-biased threaded screw in the male connector subassembly connects with a tapped end of a locator pin in the female connector subassembly. The threaded screw and tapped locator pin locate each other by a cone-shaped protrusion at the top of the locator pin in conjunction with a recessed area of a locator seat within the male connector subassembly. The force-responsive clamp assembly accepts a tab of the removable film gate when the film gate is pushed into the photographic film printer, and releases the tab when a pulling force is applied to the film gate. The releasable locator connector assembly prevents movement of the film gate relative to the docking frame along each of an X, Y and Z axes, as well as preventing rotation of the film gate about the X and Y axes. The force-responsive clamp assembly prevents rotation of the film gate about the Z axis.

Method and apparatus for positioning film in a photographic film printer

A low cost, compact light shutter apparatus for a photographic film scanner in which an elongate light shutter mechanism has a curvilinear surface nested in a mating, curvilinear recess formed in an opaque plate. The shutter mechanism preferably is comprised of an elongated blade of sufficient length and width to cover a light transmitting slot in the plate when the blade is in a light blocking position. The blade is attached to a rotary solenoid for movement between light blocking and light transmitting positions.
