An embodiment described herein provides a technique to determine a focus point of a lense. Light is directed from a light source through the lense and onto a target surface. The light source and target surface may be positioned on opposite sides of the lense. The target surface may correspond to the position of where a primary light source for the particular application is to be located. A reflection passing through the lense from the reflective target surface may be located. A determination is then made as to whether the position where the reflection was located also could also corresponds to a focus point for the lense, if the primary light source was to be located at or near the target surface.

Apparatus and technique for determining placement of optical components in optical communication applications

A delatch mechanism includes wedges that reside in pockets adjacent to a post on a module when the module is latched in a cage. Pulling on a handle pulls the wedges out of the pockets so that the wedges rise and lift a tab. Pulling the delatch mechanism to a limit of its motion frees the post on the module from the tab, and further pulling transfers to the module to pull the module out of the cage. The delatch mechanism can include a spring system that returns the wedges to their pockets for latching, allows movement of the wedges relative to the module for lifting of the tab, and locks into the module to pull the module free of the cage. Handles for the latch mechanism can include a bail, a flexible tab, or fixed handle that is part of an integrated structure including the wedges.

An optical isolator is fabricated upon a lead frame having an LED section which is rotated 180.degree. to position the LED over the photodiode. Prior to rotation both the LED and the photodiode attachment portions of the leads are down set a predetermined amount to fix the size of the isolation gap between the LED and the photodiode. Dielectric sheets are attached to the outer surfaces of the LED and photodiode leads and an optically transmissive resin is injected therebetween to form a light guide and to encapsulate the LED and photodiode dice and their associated bond wires. In an alternate embodiment a sheet is attached to the outer surface of one lead and a dielectric sheet thereagainst is positioned at a tilted angle between the LED and the photodiode.

Optical isolator with encapsulation

An optical isolator is fabricated upon a lead frame having an LED section which is rotated 180.degree. to position the LED over the photodiode. Prior to rotation both the LED and the photodiode attachment portions (81,83) of the leads are down set a predetermined amount to fix the size of the isolation gap between the LED and the photodiode. Dielectric sheets are attached to the outer surfaces of the LED and photodiode leads and an optically transmissive resin is injected therebetween to form a light guide and to encapsulate the LED and photodiode dice and their associated bond wires. In an alternate embodiment a sheet is attached to the outer surface of one lead and a dielectric sheet thereagainst is positioned at a tilted angle between the LED and the photodiode.

Optical isolator

A high voltage optical isolator has a light emitting diode which illuminates a photodetector for conveying a signal by optical means while isolating the input voltage from the output. The LED is spaced from the photodetector by an extension on an opaque reflective light guide around the optical path between the LED and photodetector. The light guide has a transparent silicone resin medium in a light passage between the LED and photodetector. The internal and external portions of the light guide provide elongated crooked paths for enhancing electrical breakdown resistance. The entire optical isolator is packaged in a conventional DIP. Isolation voltages of 5,000 volts or more and enhancement of light flux coupling up to 300% are obtained.
