An electrophoretic medium comprises an electrophoretic layer, a layer of lamination adhesive and a polymeric layer disposed between the electrophoretic layer and the lamination adhesive layer, the polymeric layer being impermeable to the fluid. A second form of electrophoretic medium has a layer of a complex of an alkali metal and a polymer in contact with the electrophoretic layer. A third form of electrophoretic medium comprises a plurality of discrete droplets of internal phase in a binder, and further comprises a salt.

Materials for use in electrophoretic displays

Methods for non-random loading of single analyte molecules into array structures are provided. The methods allow for distribution of a population of target molecules into a plurality of size confined regions such as wells. Sizing moieties are linked to individual target molecules. The sizing moieties are of sufficient size, relative to the size-confined reaction or observation regions, such that only a selected number of sizing moieties will fit into the size confined regions. The confined regions and the sizing moieties or target molecules comprise a selected charge that allow for controlling the loading of the sizing moities.

Single molecule loading methods and compositions

The application relates to improved optical containment structures, methods of manufacture and use, and systems for employing same. The optical containment structures generally comprise zero-mode waveguide structures having non-reflective walls. The non-reflective walls allow the preparation of optical containment regions in which the optical containment dimensions can be decoupled from the solution containment dimensions. The application also relates to methods for producing islands of functionality within nanoscale apertures.

Methods, substrates, and devices related to arrays of optical confinements having surfaces with high levels of bias. Substrates having transparent or silica based portions and opaque or reflective portions are treated with 1) a selective passivating agent, that selectively coats the opaque or reflective regions, 2) a functionalizing agent such as a coupling agent, and 3) a selective removal agent, which selectively removes functionalizing agent from the passivated opaque or reflective surfaces.

Compositions, devices, systems and methods for reducing and/or preventing photo-induced damage of one or more reactants in an illuminated analytical reaction by addition of one or more photo-induced damage mitigating agents to the reaction mixture and allowing the reaction to proceed for a period that is less than a photo-induced damage threshold period.

Photo-induced damage mitigating agents and preparation and methods of use thereof

The application relates to methods for producing islands of functionality within nanoscale apertures. Islands of functionality can be produced by growing an aperture constriction layer from the walls, functionalizing the exposed base of the aperture, then removing the aperture constriction layer. The aperture constriction layer can be produced, for example, by anodically growing an oxide layer onto a cladding through which the aperture extends. The islands of functionality can be used to bind a single molecule of interest, such as an enzyme within the nanoscale aperture.

Methods for producing ZMWs with islands of functionality

A coating of an encapsulated electrophoretic medium is formed on a substrate () by dispersing in a fluid () a plurality of electrophoretic capsules (), contacting at least a portion of a substrate () with the fluid (); and applying a potential difference between at least a part of the portion of the substrate () contacting the fluid () and a counter-electrode () in electrical contact with the fluid (), thereby causing capsules () to be deposited upon at least part of the portion of the substrate () contacting the fluid (). Patterned coatings of capsules containing different colors may be deposited in registration with electrodes using multiple capsule deposition steps. Alternatively, patterned coatings of capsules may be formed by applying a fluid form of an electrophoretic medium to a substrate, and applying a temporally varying voltage between an electrode and the substrate. The process may be repeated to allow for deposition of full color displays.
