An indicating desiccant comprises a silica-based material having impregnated thereon a source of iron and a source of bromide, the source of iron being present in an amount up to 2.0 percent by weight, calculated as Fe with respect to weight of the silica-based material, and the source of bromide being present in an amount such that the weight ratio of Br to Fe is at least 0.1:1.

Silica-based indicating desiccants

Silica-based carrier impregnated with iron(III) or iron(II) salts functions as a humidity indicator giving a yellow/amber to nearly colourless colour change as the carrier humidifies.

Humidity indicators

A granular composition, especially for incorporation in washing powder formulations, comprises at least 40% by weight of an amorphous silica and typically at least 30% by weight of a functional ingredient such as a perfume, the amorphous silica having a surface area of at least 550 m /g, a pore volume from about 1.0 to about 2.5 ml/g and a particle size of no more than 50 microns, the granules of said composition having a particle size from about 200 to about 2000 microns.
