A rotary cutting tool includes a shank portion, a cutting portion, and a cutting tip. The cutting portion includes a plurality of blades and a plurality of flutes. Each blade includes a leading face, a trailing face, and a land surface extending between the leading face and the trailing face. The cutting end includes an end cutting edge having a first end face cutting edge portion formed with a positive, neutral or negative radial angle, a positive dish angle and a negative axial rake angle, and second end face cutting edge portion formed with a highly positive radial angle, a positive dish angle and a negative axial rake angle. The highly positive radial angle of the second end face cutting edge portion enables the rotary cutting tool to perform a ramp operation at very large ramp angles of between about 15-45 degrees.

A spiral flute tap includes a body having an axial forward end and an axial rearward end. The body has a cylindrical shank portion adjacent the axial rearward end, a threaded fluted portion adjacent the axial forward end, a non-threaded fluted portion between the cylindrical shank portion and the threaded fluted portion, and a central, longitudinal axis. The spiral flute tap further includes a plurality of helical flutes formed at a helix angle, HA, with respect to the central, longitudinal axis of the tap that continuously increases in magnitude in the threaded fluted portion. In other words, the lead of the plurality of helical flutes continuously decreases in magnitude in a rearward direction for a predetermined distance. In one example, the helix angle, HA, varies at a rate of between 0.5 degrees/mm to 4.0 degrees/mm. A method of making the spiral flute tap is also disclosed.

A twist drill having a shaft with a longitudinal axis, wherein the cutting tool includes a plurality of flutes extending about the longitudinal shaft along a helix angle and a plurality of lands adjacent the flutes. Each land has a cutting edge adjacent a corresponding flute and a margin (i.e. relief surface). A cutting point is adjacent a forward end of the shaft. A first, second and third forward cutting surfaces are adjacent the first, second and third cutting edges, respectively, and extend proximate the cutting point axially rearward for a predetermined length about the longitudinal axis of the shaft. The cutting edges are unequally angularly spaced from each other, and each forward cutting surface has a primary relief angle that are unequal to each other.

A rotary cutting tool including a cutter member having an axial forward end and an axial rearward end. A cutting region is at the axial forward end of the cutter member, and a male threaded portion is adjacent the axial rearward end of the cutter member. A shank member has an axial forward end and a shank bore opening at the axial forward end. The shank bore has an axial shank bore length. The shank bore contains a female threaded portion and an axial rearward shank bore portion axially rearward of the female threaded portion. The axial rearward shank bore portion has a terminal end. When the male threaded portion of the cutter member fully engages the female threaded portion of the shank member, the axial rearward end of the cutter member being spaced a first distance axially forward of the terminal end of the axial rearward shank bore portion.

A rotary cutting tool includes a cutter of generally cylindrical shape disposed about a central longitudinal axis. The cutter has a first end having an active fluted portion and an opposite second end, the second end having a male threaded portion disposed thereabout. The cutting tool further includes a shank of generally cylindrical shape disposed about the central longitudinal axis, the shank having a recessed female threaded portion formed in a first end. The male threaded portion includes a number of threads disposed at a first pitch and the female threaded portion includes a number of threads disposed at a second pitch different than the first pitch. The cutter and the shank are selectively coupled via threaded engagement of the male threaded portion and the female threaded portion.

A method for forming the cutting edge and adjacent contoured surface area of rotary cutting tools utilizing a laser to remove material from the cutting end of the tool to create a predetermined point-by-point geometry is disclosed. Relatively complex surface and edge geometries may be formed by directing a laser beam toward the cutting end of the tool at an angle having a component that is normal to the surface of the cutting end. The laser beam is directed in multiple passes across the surface of the cutting end to remove material and form the desired cutting edge and adjacent three-dimensional contoured surface geometry.

A rotary drill bit for engaging an earth strata material includes an elongate drill bit body having an axial forward end and an axial rearward end, and a cutting insert attached to the axial forward end of the elongate drill bit body. The cutting insert has an elongate insert body rotatable about a central axis and includes a pair of symmetrical halves symmetrical about the central axis, each symmetrical half including a leading face, a top surface having a relief surface, a T-land surface extending between the leading face and the relief surface and a cutting edge formed at the intersection of the T-land surface and the relief surface. The cutting edge can have a negative axial rake angle. The relief surface can include a primary relief surface and a secondary relief surface.

A two-prong rotary drill bit for engaging an earth strata material includes a drill bit body having an axis of rotation, the drill bit body having a head portion at an axial forward end and a shank portion at an axial rearward end, the head portion having two mounting arms offset from the axis of rotation of the drill bit body. The two-prong rotary drill bit also includes a cutting insert attached to each mounting arm at the axial forward end of the drill bit body. Each cutting insert includes a leading face facing in the direction of rotation, a top surface having a relief surface, a T-land surface extending between the leading face and the relief surface of the top surface and a cutting edge formed at the intersection of the T-land surface and the relief surface of the top surface.

A flat cutter bit for engaging an earth strata material includes a non-rotatable shank portion, a head portion integrally formed with the non-rotatable shank portion and including a tip region distal from the non-rotatable shank portion, and a cutting insert mounted at the tip region of the head portion. The cutting insert includes a body having an angled leading face, a top surface having a relief surface, a T-land surface extending between the angled leading face and the relief surface of the top surface and a cutting edge formed at the intersection of the T-land surface and the relief surface of the top surface.

A rotary drill bit for engaging an earth strata material includes a cutting insert attached to an axial forward end of an elongate drill bit body. The cutting insert includes an elongate insert body rotatable about a central axis with a pair of symmetrical halves symmetrical about the central axis, each symmetrical half comprising: a leading face; a top surface having a primary relief surface; a web thinning gash extending between the leading face and the primary relief surface, the web thinning gash having a debris evacuation portion centrally disposed adjacent the central axis and a distal transition portion disposed adjacent the debris evacuation portion; a first leading cutting edge at the intersection of the leading face and the primary relief surface; and a second leading cutting edge at the intersection of the web thinning gash and the primary relief surface of the top surface.

A cutting tap includes a body having an axial forward end and an axial rearward end. The body has a threaded body portion with spiral flutes adjacent the axial forward end, a cylindrical shank portion adjacent the axial rearward end. The threaded body portion includes a chamfered fluted section and a constant diameter section. The threads have a chamfer relief extending radially inward from the cutting edge to a heel of a land. The amount of chamfer relief reaches a maximum value at a point between the cutting edge and the heel, and then becomes smaller between the point of maximum relief and the heel of the land to provide a clearance that reduces the propensity of the tap to chip.

A cutting tool having a shaft with a longitudinal axis, wherein the cutting tool includes a first flute extending about the longitudinal shaft along a helix angle and a first cutting edge adjacent the first flute. The cutting tool further includes a third flute extending about the longitudinal shaft along a helix angle and a third cutting edge adjacent the third flute. A drill for making a hole within a workpiece has a body extending along a longitudinal axis, at least one flute extending along the body, and a drill point extending from the end of the body. The drill point has a periphery and is comprised of a chisel edge, a primary cutting edge extending inwardly from the periphery, a secondary cutting edge extending outwardly from the chisel edge, and a tertiary cutting edge connecting the primary cutting edge with the secondary cutting edge, wherein the tertiary cutting edge has a negative axial rake angle. A method for producing such a drill point is also disclosed wherein in one grinding pass a gash forms the axial rake angle of the secondary cutting edge, and in a separate grinding pass a portion of the secondary cutting edge is removed to produce a tertiary cutting edge having an axial rake angle that is negative.

A cutting tap includes a body having an axial forward end and an axial rearward end and a central longitudinal axis. The body has a fluted section at the axial forward end. The fluted section includes a chamfered fluted section extending from the axial forward end of the body and terminating at a first full cutting thread. The chamfered fluted section includes a first cutting thread located a first distance from the axial forward end of the body, and a second cutting thread located a second distance from the axial forward end of the body. The second distance is greater than the first distance. The chamfered fluted section is shaped such that a thickness of a section of material removed by the second cutting thread is smaller than a thickness of a section of material removed by the first cutting thread. A method of making the cutting tap is also disclosed.

The elongate body has a fluted portion that beginning near and extends in a rearward direction from the forward end. The fluted portion has a flute that defines a cutting edge. The flute presents a concave cutting face wherein the concave cutting face is defined by a first radius. The flute further presents a concave core surface adjacent to the concave cutting face wherein the concave core surface is defined by a second radius. The flute presents a convex heel surface adjacent to the concave core surface wherein the convex heel surface is defined by a fourth radius.
