A submersible pumping assembly for a deviated wellbore is disclosed. The pump assembly including one or more electric submersible pumps disposed in a casing. The casing being disposed in a below ground deviated wellbore. The assembly including one or more electric motors disposed in the casing and configured to operate the one or more electric submersible pumps. The assembly further including one or more flexible joints. The one or more flexible joints are configured to linearly couple the one or more electric submersible pumps and the one or more electric motors and impart flexibility to the assembly in the deviated wellbore. Also provided is a submersible assembly for pumping a fluid.

Flexible electrical submersible pump and pump assembly

A system for determining the ability of a selected motor to function in a wellbore preferably includes an input device, a data storage device and a program. The program is preferably configured to determine an expected motor load based on motor input data and application input data. Using the expected motor load, the program determines a projected motor temperature increase. The program adds the projected motor temperature increase with the wellbore temperature to determine a projected operating temperature. The projected operating temperature is compared with the maximum recommended operating temperature of the selected motor, or a list of candidate motors, to determine the ability of the selected motor to function in the wellbore.

System and method of selecting a motor for a wellbore

A concatenated motor assembly for providing rotational power that includes a continuous rotatable shaft cooperating with a first motor module assembly. The first motor module assembly communicates with a motor coupling unit, which in turn communicates with a second motor module. The second motor module and the motor coupling unit each cooperate with the rotatable shaft. The first and second motor modules are wound rotor electric motor. The first motor module assembly generates and provides an induced current to the motor coupling unit, which in turn provides power input to the second motor module assembly.

Concatenated motor assembly

A system for pumping fluid from a well-bore that includes a pump assembly driven by a first motor module assembly via a continuous rotatable shaft. The first motor module assembly includes an induction motor having a multi-phase stator and a wound rotor. Energizing the stator of the induction motor of the first motor module induces a current in the windings of the wound rotor of the induction motor of the first motor module. The induced current is supplied to a motor coupling unit which generates power to drive a second motor module assembly electrically connected to the motor coupling unit. The second motor module assembly further drives the pump assembly via the continuous rotatable shaft.

Submersible concatenated system

An electric motor that may be used in a remote location, such as in a wellbore for pumping production fluids. The electric motor is designed to permit real-time adjustment of the position feedback signals to optimize motor performance. A position sensor is coupled to the rotor to sense rotor position. Simultaneously, a parameter, such as shaft twist, is measured, and a feedback control signal is provided. A processor receives the position sensor signals and the feedback control signals, and adjusts the energization of the stator windings to optimize motor performance.

Real-time control of feedback signals to a motor for optimum performance

A modular stator for use in an electric motor. The modular stator includes a plurality of stator sections and a plurality of connectors. The plurality of stator sections have conductors extending therethrough with exposed terminal ends. The connectors have corresponding conductive elements with receptacles for receiving the terminal ends. Thus, a given stator may be assembled to a variety of desired lengths by connecting the appropriate number of modular components.

Modular motor construction

A sensor assembly is used with a submergible pumping system within a wellbore. The sensor assembly is an integral part of the string of submergible components that form the submergible pumping system. One embodiment of the sensor assembly utilizes a sensor for detecting the axial downthrust load acting on the shaft of a submergible pump. The downthrust load can be used to determine, for instance, flow rate through the submergible pump.

Method and apparatus for measuring operating parameters of a submergible

A submergible pumping unit for raising viscous fluids from a well is driven by an electronic drive and control system, a first portion of which is located above the well, and a second portion of which is coupled to the submergible pumping unit. The drive and control system includes a power supply circuit located above the well for converting AC power from a source to DC power having current and voltage levels. The DC power is transmitted to the pumping unit via a two-conductor DC bus cable. The pumping unit includes a switching circuit which receives the DC power for driving a submergible motor, such as a permanent magnet brushless motor. The speed of the motor, and of a pump coupled thereto, is proportional to the voltage of the DC power applied to the pumping unit. The pump is preferably a progressive cavity pump, and the drive and control circuitry provides sufficient torque to start the pump from a static condition. A control circuit is provided for transmitting configuration and desired flow rate and speed data to the power supply.

Method and apparatus for controlling a submergible pumping system

A system for heating viscous fluids in a wellbore includes a submergible pumping system comprising a pump and submergible electric motor. A heating unit is coupled to the pumping system and is supplied with electrical energy through a cable used to supply electrical energy to the motor. The heating unit may include a direct or alternating current heater and protective circuitry. The heating unit may be supplied with electrical energy through the motor stator windings or via a jumper arranged in parallel with the stator windings. Switches may be included in the heating unit and in a motor base for energizing the motor and the heating unit based upon sensed temperatures of the viscous fluids surrounding the pumping system.

Method and apparatus for heating viscous fluids in a well

A brushless permanent magnet motor for use within a electric submergible pumping system is controlled without utilizing rotor position sensors, by sampling the voltage of the motor's windings. The operation of the motor is governed by control circuits that provide signals representative of the winding EMFs. The control circuits utilize an integrator, a offset corrector, and a crossover detector to simulate outputs received from Hall effect devices. Outputs from the control circuits are used to sequentially gate an array of commutation transistors to apply power to the different windings. These outputs are also used to develop a tachometer signal to regulate the speed of the motor, by controlling the supply voltage to the commutation transistors. Prior to starting the motor, the output bus voltage is permitted to rise from zero volts to a predetermined level. Then, the rotor rotates to a predetermined home position with regard to the stator. During this time, integrators are precharged to assist crossover detectors in establishing the initial timing relationship between the three motor phases. As the motor begins to rotate, the motor control is performed by detecting and processing winding EMFs, and operating the motor in a brushless D.C. mode.
