A method includes determining, at a communication device, a designation of a source communication device based on information related to a communication from the source communication device. The method further includes selecting, at the communication device and based on the designation, a prompt from multiple prompts. The prompt includes a first prompt in response to the designation being a first designation of multiple designations. The prompt includes a second prompt in response to the designation being a second designation of the multiple designations. The method includes sending the prompt from the communication device to the source communication device.

Communication device prompt selection

A method includes receiving, at a destination communication device, information related to a communication from a source communication device. The method further includes determining, at the destination communication device, a designation of the source communication device based on the information. The method further includes selecting, based on the designation, a prompt from multiple prompts. The method further includes sending the prompt from the destination communication device to the source communication device. The prompt is a request for second information related to urgency of the call.

Distinctive ring tones prompted by call urgency and context

A method includes receiving, at an application server, information related to a call from a calling device to a called device. The method further includes determining, at the application server, a designation of the calling device. The method further includes sending a prompt to the calling device from the application server. The prompt is a request for information related to urgency of the call, where the prompt corresponds to a first prompt when the designation is a first designation and the prompt corresponds to a second prompt when the designation is a second designation. The method further includes receiving a response to the prompt at the application server and modifying a call setup message based on the response.

Devices, methods and systems for enhanced ringing features on communications terminals. Flexible user-established rules, customized in a subscriber profile database, enable the ring-tone to vary based on caller-id, caller priority, call-urgency (as determined by caller), call context and so forth. Call set-up logic applies the profile rules prior to completing the call set-up. 'Buzz-tones' extend the basic distinctive ringing feature to the 'silent' mode that is currently available on cell-phones, which is of particular utility to subscribers with hearing disabilities. Other kinds of alerts (audio/motion/visual) like flashing colors on a display, moving pictures and the like, and any combination of notification modes, are contemplated by alternative embodiments.

Customer communications can be controlled in accordance with customized rules. An initial menu includes options to modify an existing rule or create a new rule for controlling customer communications. An initial selection criteria menu includes options to indicate whether the new customized rule will be built using a preexisting template or starting from initial blank rule criteria. A list of preexisting templates for creating new customized rules can be provided, and input to populate a selected template can be accepted. Initial blank rule criteria for creating new customized rules can also be provided, including initial criteria and rule conditions for selected initial criteria. Communications are processed in accordance with the stored new customized rule.

Incoming and outgoing call control customization

A method for integrating presence services into a telecommunications system that includes a presence server. The method includes receiving a query, by the presence server from service logic, the query including call parameters and call information, regarding a call from a session initiator to a session terminator. The method also includes comparing, by the presence server, the call parameters and the call information with a stored presence profile established for the session terminator, the stored presence profile including preferred treatment information. The method further includes collecting usage information of the session terminator, and automatically generating the preferred treatment information, when the preferred treatment information has not been established. The method then determines a treatment of the call, by the presence server, based upon the stored presence profile and the preferred treatment information.

Presence enhanced telephony service architecture

Customer communications can be controlled in accordance with customized rules. An entry menu includes options to modify an existing rule or create a new rule for controlling customer communications. An initial selection criteria menu includes options to indicate whether the new customized rule will be built using a preexisting template or starting from initial blank rule criteria. A list of preexisting templates for creating new customized rules can be provided, and input to populate a selected template can be accepted. Initial blank rule criteria for creating new customized rules can also be provided, including initial criteria and rule conditions for selected initial criteria. Communications are processed in accordance with the stored new customized rule.

A method is provided for customizing a call control rule by a subscriber at a graphical user interface. The method includes providing a first display, including multiple conditions relating to identifying calls involving the at least one telephone number, and receiving a first selection of at least one identifying condition. The method further includes providing a second display, including multiple call dispositions relating to processing the calls based on the at least one selected condition, and receiving a second selection of at least one call disposition. The identifying condition and the call disposition are stored as the call control rule in association with the telephone number, and calls involving the telephone number are processed in accordance with the stored call control rule. The method may also include providing a third display describing the call control rule contemporaneously with receiving the first and second selections.

A subscriber associates a ring-tone media selection based on a media genre, author, or title to a calling number. When an incoming call is detected, a particular ring-tone media selection, based on the subscriber's association, may be streamed from a central server to the subscriber's customer premises equipment and then played. Alternatively, when an incoming call is detected, a particular ring-tone selection indicator, based on the subscriber's association, may be sent from a central server to the subscriber's customer premises equipment which then plays a pre-stored ring-tone selection media associated with the indicator.

Flexible ring-tone service

A system and method of publishing contact information is disclosed. In a particular embodiment, the method includes receiving a command to publish a collection of contacts to a plurality of recipients, where the collection of contacts is associated with a network address book of a sender. The method also includes receiving a distribution list that identifies the plurality of recipients. Additionally, the method includes sending a notification to each of the plurality of recipients, where the notification includes an invitation to subscribe to the collection of contacts. The method also includes sending the collection of contacts to at least one of the plurality of recipients who subscribes to the collection of contacts.

System and method of publishing contact information

A broadband communication channel access network comprises an Ethernet device disposed in a serving area interface. The Ethernet device serves as an Ethernet bridge for a neighborhood service area. The Ethernet device communicates with a plurality of customer premises modems in the neighborhood service area. An Ethernet switch disposed at a central office communicates with the Ethernet device via a fiber optic medium using an Internet Protocol over a second Ethernet standard. The Ethernet switch provides a packet data core network termination.

Ethernet-based broadband communication channel methods and systems

A telecommunications network is enhanced with a presence component. A session initiator requests a session with a session terminator by contacting a presence server. The presence server receives the request for presence information and processes the request by comparing the session initiator's identity to preferences of the session terminator to identify a preferred treatment. The presence server returns the preferred treatment to the session initiator. The session is then initiated or not initiated based upon the preferred treatment.

A digital subscriber line access network comprises a remote Ethernet device disposed in a serving area interface. The remote Ethernet device serves as an Ethernet bridge for a neighborhood service area. The remote Ethernet device communicates with a plurality of customer premises modems in the neighborhood service area using an Internet Protocol over an Ethernet standard with a digital subscriber line physical layer. An Ethernet switch disposed at a central office communicates with the remote Ethernet device via a fiber optic medium using an Internet Protocol over a second Ethernet standard. The Ethernet switch provides a packet data core network termination.

Ethernet-based digital subscriber line methods and systems

A system and method are provided for reviewing and updating a subscriber's telecommunications services using a graphical user interface via multiple data networks. A data message is received at an intelligent peripheral from the graphical user interface via at least one of the data networks. The data message indicates a subscriber's desired update to a selected service. The data message is converted into a protocol compatible with a service control point. The converted data message is identical to a data message that the intelligent peripheral would create if the subscriber had entered the desired update via an interactive voice response system. The converted data message is transmitted to the service control point, which updates the service in accordance with the subscriber's update. Thus, the service is updated substantially contemporaneously with the request. Moreover, the subscriber retains the ability to update and review service data via the interactive voice response.

System and method for providing remote access to telecommunications services

A system daemon starts through normal system startup procedures and reads its configuration file to determine which data entities (e.g., directories and files) are to be monitored. The monitoring includes a valid MD5 signature, correct permissions, ownership of the file, and an existence of the file. If any modification are made to the data entities, then the system daemon generates an alarm (intended for the administrator of the host) that an intrusion has taken place. Once an intrusion is detected, then the isolating steps or commands are issued in a real-time continuous manner to protect the host system from attack or intrusion.
