A high frequency energy generator system includes a plurality of high frequency energy generator heads. Each head includes a respective magnetron; a common drive unit for producing power for the plurality of magnetrons; and a connector arrangement connecting each of the plurality of heads to the common drive unit to supply power to the magnetrons. At least one of the heads is located remote from the common drive unit.

A switching arrangement for applying voltage pulses across a load, comprising a plurality of capacitive elements (C-C) connected in series, and a first switch arrangement (S) connected to the series connection to apply voltage pulses to the load, and a second switch arrangement (S, S) connected to a capacitive element of the series connection, such that one of the capacitive elements (C) can be switched out of or switched into the series connection, in order to produce voltage pulses of respectively lower or higher levels, without the need to dissipate energy into a resistive load.

Switching arrangement

A system to protect electrical circuits from rapid changes of voltage associated with a fault in an electrical load comprises an inductor placed in series between a drive circuit and load. The inductor is designed to be inefficient or lossy when the inductor core is magnetised. Magnetisation of the core only occurs when a rapid change in voltage is applied across the inductor coils. Because the inductor is inefficient, the induced impedance in the inductor increases rapidly during a fault event. The overall impedance of the circuit increases rapidly and the rapid change in voltage is dissipated at a rate associated with the CR constant of the circuit.

Electrical circuit protection system

A switching arrangement for a high voltage load provides high voltage pulses to the load. The switching arrangement includes switching modules, where n is typically (). A load capacitance is Cd is required to avoid voltage overshoot at the load and is provided by a capacitance of nCd arranged in parallel with each switch.

High voltage switching apparatus

A high voltage switching apparatus delivers kV pulses to a load such as a magnetron. The switching apparatus comprises a switching stack surrounded by capacitors and both arranged within a housing. Lt power is supplied to the stack, e.g. for control electronics, by magnetic coupling across a non-conducting wall of the housing. Annular inserts are arranged on either side of the wall. Each insert receives a transformer core and winding. The bottom surfaces of the inserts carry a conductive coating to minimise electric stresses. Ht power is also supplied through the wall.

Galvanically isolated delivery of power to high voltage circuits parts

A rectifier transformer comprises two secondary windings, preferably with a single turn on each winding. The rectifier diodes form an integral part of each of the secondary windings. Thus, a compact arrangement is realised. In a high voltage application, the rectifier diodes comprise a plurality of relatively low voltage diodes in parallel to one another. The overall capacitance of the rectifier circuit is reduced by this arrangement.

Transformer/rectifier arrangement

In a switching arrangement, a plurality of modules are connected such that the main switching elements, FETs, are in series. Control of and power to the FETs is supplied via a single turn primary passing through a plurality of toroidal secondary transformers. A train of control pulses is applied to the single turn primary and their polarity determines whether the main FET is switched on or off, the length of the pulse train determining the pulse width and PRF of the output of the switching arrangement. The control pulses are also used to supply power to the main driver of the main FET.
