Formaldehyde containing resins used as curing, setting or crosslinking resins in a variety of natural product adhesives can be made with surprisingly low and novel levels of free formaldehyde, can be made using reactants that can remove free formaldehyde from the resin solution or from the adhesive.

Quantities of natural tocopherol can be aminoalkylated to selectively introduce functional groups onto the 5 and 7 positions of the non-alpha-tocopherol homologues. Natural d-alpha-tocopherol can then be separated from the aminoalkylated non-alpha-tocopherols as salts. After separation the adducts can then be reduced by hydrogenolysis, thereby upgrading vitamin E activity by making d-alpha-tocopherol out of the intermediate tocopherol adducts. Salts of these adducts can be crystallized by contacting the adducts with phosphoric acid. Salts will form upon acetic acid addition, and the delta-tocopherol adduct acetate can be isolated as a crystalline solid. The adducts can also be regenerated from the salts and transformed to alpha-tocopherol by reduction of the adduct.

Tocopherol homologues found in a tocopherol-containing feed material can be purified by forming a borate tocopherol ester and then distilling the material containing the esterified tocopherol to remove the materials boiling at temperatures lower than the esterified tocopherol. The borate tocopherol esters remaining after distillation are then reacted with a member selected from the group consisting of: Water, methanol, and ethanol to form tocopherol homologues from the borate tocopherol ester, and the boron by product from this reaction is removed. The tocopherol is then recovered by collecting it, distilling it or by any other convenient collection method.

Purification of tocopherols

This invention relates to the purification and concentration of tocopherol compounds from an organic feed material containing these compounds. A sufficient amount of caustic methanol is used to contact a tocopherol-containing organic material whereby two phases are formed; one of which is tocopherol-enriched caustic methanol. The phases are separated and the caustic is neutralized. The tocopherol is then recovered from the tocopherol-enriched methanol. One way of recovery is by adding a sufficient amount of water, causing the tocopherol to form a separate phase, which can then be removed in this more purified, concentrated form. Alternatively, the tocopherol can be isolated by removal of the methanol by distillation after acidic neutralization, and then washing the tocopherol with water to remove the salt resulting from neutralization.
